Right ongoing saga,
I ordered a stub axle and cv joint for my defender it's a td5.
Looking at the old stub axle it's got a bronze thrust bearing pressed on the stub.
New one has not, the kits does not contain one.
Haynes says refer to main stealer.
I can get one from a local supplier (I think)
Is it possible to remove and reuse the old one?
Also the seal and needle roller bearing that goes inside the stub.....
I examined the old one then knocked the new seal in and pushed the bearing in left it flush with the stub axle as per old one but... There is a gap between the seal and bearing and there isn't on the old one?
Am I better finding a used one? Would a disco stub fit and are they the same as mine I.e with this bronze thrust bearing?
Please help lads iv had 8 hours on it today and it's doing my tree in

Personally i wouldn't reuse the thrust bearing it's easily damaged and it's on tight and needs chiselling off. I know the part number for new thrust bearing is FTC56. I know this because my kit didn't come with it and had to order it separately. :)

As for the seal and roller bearing that sounds correct. In the rave manual it states to press the seal in but doesn't state how far. And the bearing is supposed to sit flush with the end of the stub. I'd like to tell you how far to press the seal but i didn't refit it when i rebuilt my axle as i plan on running bearings and cvs in ep90.

The thing is!! the seal is there to stop the swivel greas from going up the stub axle right?
Looking at it the seal is a loose fit on the splined shaft coming from the c/v so that cant be right???
Iv just seem a pair of disco stubs for sale at a breakers £10 in good used nick, im tempted

Yea that's right.

The seal should sit on a smooth part of the shaft just before the cv. Not sure how you've got it sitting on the splined part. Here's pic of mine just before the stub axle went on.

You should be able to see how the oil seal, bearing and thrust washer sit from that.

Yeah the bearing sits on that raised shoulder nearest the cv and seal is in front of it?
Well mine is a loose fit on that shoulder, hmm something's wrong here
