Helping a mate on a project he's got and having issues getting the engine running. It's a V8 on SU carbs. Fule is getting to carbs fine and all plugs are sparking. It just wont catch.

Could someone give me some pointers. Cheers

Yeh could be order. Though it was sent direct from having its mot passed al be it being stood for a month in between. Was told it was just running a little lean but all working

Any other thoughts would help cheers

If fuel is getting to carbs but no further, the fault is likely to be with the carbs themselves. First of all, check the seal between the carbs & intake manifold. If that is ok, then you may have to strip the carb and clean the jet. If you do strip the carb, then I would buy a carb overhaul kit (Try and get genuine, and avoid Britpart) and replace all the bits that come in the kit.

I was actually thinking about changing for a webber kit.

What's the easiest way to see if the fule is getting into the cab? All I have done is remove the fule feed pipe that goes into the carb.

Float needles may be stuck if its been stood.
Spray some carb cleaner or WD40 in carb whilst cranking, if it fires then no fuel getting passed jets

Mine was a pain. I turned the ignition on till the pump built up pressure, you can hear the ticking of the fuel pump slow down, pull the choke out and push the throttle to the floor then release, allow the pump to rebuild pressure then turn the engine over and it should fire. Mine runs better on half choke rather than full choke after it fires till it warms up. Hope this helps and makes sense.

It does pal, tried all day with combinations of what you say with no joy.

Is it old petrol in the tank, try putting neat in the cylinders through the spark plugs and see if she coughs, might even run :p

Had a 83 that either would or wouldn't start, never got to the bottom of it so sold it. Bloke who bought it said it was a dodgy ignition coil, but if you have a spark it shouldn't be that.

Agree a drop of petrol down the carbs will help eliminate fuel side

Not been able to get out to day due to weather but I had a quick look at a reference manual and notice No6 are connected together using a hose. The manual suggest they should be connected to the crand case breather or blocked off. Dont know if this would be effecting things

a bit stanley unwin anyone ?

There are crank case breather pipes on carbs, if they are left unused you will get a very weak mixture because air will be drawn in through them.

Best block them off or connect them to crankcase breather pipes to get mixture correct.

Would them being connected have the same effect?
They don't suck much when connected as it should be a closed crankcase breather system which means that its sealed.

Block em off and if it starts then that's yer problem:)
