Help required 300 TDI not starting !!

Hi can anyone please help, I recently had my expansion tank burst on my 300 TDI while on a busy road ! Which didn't help but hey !

I managed to start it again after the overheating & burst tank, & got it on a trailer to get it home & in the shed, I got a replacement expansion tank & re-filled it up with coolant & water etc .. Then I tried to start it but it didn't want to start, it turned ok & it has a replacement starter so that's ok, I tried to start but it seemed to be more than just turning over, but didn't quite want to run on its own !! Black smoke filled the shed so I thought I better stop,

I am concerned a bit now as not quite sure why it won't run, can anyone help please please ???

I am considering it may be a big job meaning taking the engine out for a complete overhaul ! But don't want to if I don't need to ????
 
Would that stop the engine trying to start then ?

Would I need to take the engine out & can it be done on the car ??
 
Don't if people are trying to be clever & sarcastic or if they genuine but I am fairly new to some engine issues & only came in here as I thought some people may help & not be stuck up jacked up divs if that is the case, NOT saying it is though,

So I think I'll ask else where for more friendly advise

Change ur name to keyboard warrior FFS. you've had great advice. it sounds like you've blown the head gasket. no compression and it won't start. Diesels rely on very high Compression to ignite the fuel.

removing cylinder head is a piece of ****, easily done with engine in car, because it's an OHV engine with pushrods. There's no cambelt or camshaft to worry about..
 
The advice you have been given is good. The overheat will probably have ****ed your head gasket, this is certainly likely to cause your engine to run badly if it runs at all. They are also right in saying changing a head gasket is a fairly straight forward job, and can be done in less than a day.
 
Sorry it wasn't aimed at you redhand, & I do really appreciate you others who genuinely help but it just seemed sible88 was trying to be funny, bout where I come from it may help !!

Any way I understand that I need to change the head gasket & I'm confident in changing it, I have looked for some kits on eBay but there is 3-4 different types & I'm not sure which one my L reg one requires, something bout 1 hole, 2 hole etc etc any advice on that would be helpfull ! Again sorry to genuine people who have helped but I don't need funny attitude from some !
 
no - Sible was genuinely being helpful. if yu change yo usercp to show a general area, yu mite have got offers to help.

if yu are that touchy, yu wont last long on here. grab a flac jacket and chill.
 
Ok ok get the point !! Will chill , this is new to me as I mainly just get on with stuff myself as it hasn't involved touching the heart of the car, but now it has that's why I'm here

I was a Zuki man until I bought this disco & realised how much more better they are all round , I took his comments as thinking I'm a bit thick as from where I come from , especially as I had no answer

Sorry to all , so the suggestion is to get a no hole gasket set which I think is 1.6mm thick ???
 
just have look. DO NOT POST. in anything goes :eek: - it will give yu a flavour for this site - full of ruff diamonds , but they call a spade an f'ing shovel. no standing on ceremony here. they say it like they see it.
 
Yes I know it has 4 cylinders but on one edge of the gasket some have holes anoint 2-5mm in diameter which I'm assuming are for certain pin position when the head is removed !! But I am guessing but I don't want to guess & get the wrong set !!

The No. of holes denote the thickness of the gasket (1 hole gaskets being the thinnest upto no hole being the thickest). If the head requires a skim, a thicker gasket will be required to compensate for the lost metal (3 hole gaskets seem to be popular).
