hi all,

got home from work yesterday 2 hours before heading out for a weekend green laning to find a huge puddle under the rear diff. now its been dropping a spot or two a day for the last 2 months so it wasnt really a problem. but seeing as i was off to the middle of wales for a weekend i decided to change the seal before i left i had a spare.

so an hour later the seal is changed and all is bone dry. 40 miles in to the trip my mates Suzuki SJ:eek: blows a rear oil seal and sprays oil over the rear brakes which were bindinng and lots and lots of smoke later he is on the rexovery truck and we are all heading home.

i checked this morning and my rear diff pinion seal is leaking again. i have a 2" lift, 300tdi defender.

why is it leaking? the new seal went in nice and tight and square.

the input shaft thpugh moved in and out about an inch when the prop and flang had been removed is the normal?

When you put the new seal in, did it have any chance of getting contaminated from previous off road grime for example?

Mud and grit will destroy an oil seal in no miles atall.

Possibly got diff oil over it cos my hands and the whole diff was covered is it worth another go witha new seal and make sure its extra clean and dry!!

What about the input shaft movement?

pack the seal by spring with Vaseline as it stops spring falling off, with the flange on and prop off the flange should not move with slop in it- if it has loads then the pinion bearing is ****ed.

I think either trewy or buckshot did a howto on repair

cheers both i will drop prop off and check movment of flange. then if ok i have another spare seal so i will packed that with vaseline ensure everything is super clean and try again.

how far in should the seal sit? the one i removed was flush with the nose of the diff the one i put in i drifted in much further so there was about 20 mm front front edge of diff tov eal.

i assumed there would be a "stop" so i kept drifting it in i guess thats another thing to add to the list.

cheers fanny

there should be no end float at all with diff flange bolted up(if there is new bearings are most likely needed)but it will move with flange off as bearing can move forward ,seals can be pressed in too far

cheers james ive definatly pressed seal in too far! too hot today so will get underneath tomoro and sort it out

Check the state of the flange where the seal runs on it. If grit and mud have got in they can wear or scuff the flange which can allow oil out and damage the new seal. There should be a finely polished line where the seal meets the flange - you might be able to use this as a guide to how far the flange should be in.
