HELP Range Rover won't start

:( Help required please.

Our 1997 P38 manual Range Rover won't start. It keeps running the battery down over night. Any ideas?
It did this before about a couple of weeks ago. Tried to start it and it just drained the battery instantly. So we put a fresh starter motor on and that fixed the problem for a while. Now it has started doing it again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It could be that the battery is duff? Have you checked the voltage with a multimeter? It could be something else such as a bad earth. You may have inadvertantly cleaned or repositioned the earth when fitting the starter.
 
first of all test the battery to see if the cold weather has killed it, this often is the case if the battery is a couple of years old. if the battery checks out and is fine it could be that the alarm is 'waking' during the night and draining the battery, it could also be that the alternator is not charging enough. don't forget most journeys this time of year involve having the lights on and heaters/heated seats etc and will all take power consumpumption(edit: what kind of word is that????) through the roof!!

i would fully charge the battery and check that first, obviously see if it starts and check the voltage. then i would run the car for a while and see what the voltages are then. i have no idea what the voltages should be when running etc but i'm sure someone will be along with the info!!!

One thing that drains teh battery that at least I suffered from was teh dreaded RF Receiver.

If yours is teh original AFR1953 it will be woken up by spurious RF signals, wifi routers, garage door openers, CCTV systems and will drain your battery. Like most people now, they all have Wii routers.

Replace the RF receiver with teh latest part YWY500170 from yoru local LR Dealership and it should cure it. Cost £140 plus fitting.

Its the RF Receiver!

It can't be the earth because it running the battery down and i'm convinced that if it wasn't earthed it wouldn't run it down. I have the battery on charge now and it's been on charge nearly 2hrs and is nearly fully charged. My son tested it and it is charging at 13.4 volts.
Basically just at a complete loss as to why it's doing it :confused:

The RF Receiver sits in the rear right-hand side next to the window with the Arial inside.

This problem relates to the cars security system being woken up ie the BECM which in turn wakes up the car, drains the battery and then sleeps again, then receives yet another signal and the whole thing starts all over again.

The original part number AFR1953 is defective and never worked as it should when it was designed back in 1995 and until 2004 when they fixed the problem for good, this problem has plagued P38 Range Rovers.

The only fix for it is to buy the new revised RF Receiver. Easily fitted if your handy and confident to do it. Not hard really…a 15 min job.

Only buy the part from an Official LR Dealer as the parts do not have any markings or part numbers on them, and therefore the only way t ensure you have the proper NEW revised part is to buy it direct from LR themselves.

It was worth every penny in reliablity stakes for me.....cured all my problems being stranded in car parks and not able to start my car in the mornings.
