my 94 J Reg is only driving in hi diff and low if i put it into N it dosnt work no gears ...is this a big problem ?

thank you colin

Well, nothing like introducing yourself first.
You've posted this in the General Talk section - would be better in the section specific to your vehicle - which you don't tell us what it is.
Anyway, from your limited description, it sounds entirely normal and not a problem - that's the way it's supposed to work!

And welcome to loonyzone!

It's not supposed to work in Neutral that's the all point of having a neutral. Thats like saying my car will only move in 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. To engage gear the selector has to be in Low or High range. The Difflock should only be used in slippery conditions where you are likely to spin the wheels.

so if the diff is in Neutral i should not have gears right ...i only get gears in hi and low ...sorry im in Malvern at friends house and im far from home my first trip i got this disco 2 days ago i have not had a 4x4 befor

for normal driving, the small lever should remain in the "H" position.
stop and move to "L" for serious off road situations.
Move it to the left to lock the diff ONLY when you've got wheelspin and avoid wide throttle openings and speeds higher than a crawl while it's locked.

By the way - we don't like txt spk on this site - we're mostly old fogies.

Diff doesn't have neutral it is a locking device which locks the centre diff and ensures that all 4 wheels turn at the same speed thus preventing wheel spin. hard over to the left is on pull back to the right to disengage. the low high lever changes from low ratio to high ratio. low is for steep hills and very slow driving with lots of pulling power. High is for normal everyday driving. if your on tarmac you should be in highrange with the difflock disengaged

Depends on what your fuel cost per litre is really dunnit?

If yer runnin' LPG then it's crap - if it's Diesel then it's best part of 6 gallons or put another way - around 30 to the gallon.

its a Diesel 2.5 cost £94.0 i put £30 in done 180 miles so far ...is this good and can i get it better ? thank you

im thinking is there anyone in the Malvern hills or around that can take a look at my 4x4 just it the once over as im new to 4x4 and i got it cheap lol

£25 fuel at 90p a litre = about 27.7 litres = 6.1 gallons

179 miles on 6.1 gallons = 29.3 miles per gallon, and that is pretty good.

However, it really does depend on accurately measuring the fuel used.

Just looking at the gauge of thinking £25 did 179 miles since the last fuel purchase is not good enough.
