hello and thanks for looking,i have a 2001 discovery td5 with a blown head gasket.my friend (a mechanic) has changed the head gasket.the head was pressure tested and was fine but it was warped so he had it skimmed.so far so good.when we tried to start it the engine locks solid although if we remove the fuse for the fuel pump it spins over fine.

any help or ideas would be greatly appriciated as we're lost as to what the problem is.

he's a good mechanic and being a friend he has helped me out free of charge, but this problem has us baffled,do you know what the problem might be.
cheers

take a multimeter and check the voltage on battery while u try to turn the engine with the pump fuse on.....if it's dropping bad it means that it's a drain somewhere along the pumps circuit(or the pump itself) and it's not enough power to turn the engine.......if it's not that then it's over my knowledge.

thanks sierrafery,we'll try that and see.
cheers mate

And if the power is dropping just a bit and u hear the starter solenoid's click, then give a good charge to the battery and try again(u can even leave the battery charger on)......if the solenoids contacts are tyred he requires a good power to engage......and u will need a repair kit(chep on ebay)

Do you mean the engine won't turn over, or do you mean the engine is locked so you can't turn it over manually with a socket on the crankshaft pulley?

I wonder what the connection can be?

Be very suspicious of the timing of the camshaft - don't try to start it until this is definitely correct.
