Hi power steering was making a funny noise next I know I had no steering and started to overheat .stopped the car found the main big belt ant the front that drives alternator powers steering had come off and there was fluid everywhere. The top up tank was bone dry. On looking closer I have found some kind of pulley laying on the subframe.A ny idea what this wheel thing is ? Any what am I looking at having to get fixed. AA on their way to get me home nightmare.

looks like your power steering pump has catastrophically failed.

not a lot you can do i'm afraid in the short term but very cheap to fix, especially if you buy a second hand power steering pump.

get some pictures for us. we love pictures :)

Ok will post some pics wen I get home. Just checked online for steering pump but the don't seem to have a round pulley on them ? Do I attach the pulley / wheel thing that I have off the old 1

Oh ok cheers don't know how the pulley managed to fall off? It's at my mechanics now will find out the damage tomorrow I guess ,fingers crossed it ain't too expensive

Just for the record, I drove a Disco 1 diesel from half way round the M4, up the M1 to Tamworth in Staffordshire, a distance of some 140 miles, without a power steering belt, so no power steering, alternator or water pump! The temperature stayed as normal and because I didn't use the electrics, apart from side lights as I was getting near home, I was able to start the car the next morning to get it to our company fitter.
FORTUNE FAVOURS THE BRAVE!

D2(Td5) is different than the Tdi, it has one belt for everything cos the timing is on chain...you loose the belt you loose charging, vacuum, cooling, steering, ACE(if fitted) ..etc

Just spoke to my mechanic ,he confirms new pump and belt required. He says it looks like the pump bearing collapsed . New or reconditioned ? If I opt for new which I probably will Paddocks seem to be the cheapest at £135 any recommendations ?

second hand will get you back to where you are now, reconditioned LR may be better quality than chinese **** quality, and new will be the best option unless as above you buy a **** one.

Personally i would fit a new one and most likely would be happy to fit a britpart one unless it looked like absolute ****e.

have you tried euro car parts?

Have ordered 1 from island 4x4 and the aux belt to go with it for £150 mechanics taking £50 to fit it so not too bad. It's my winter car so all I need now is the snow ,glad it packed in when it did.cheers for all your help lads.
