Help please is my engine destroyed?

Help Please.
MY 54 reg Freelander 1 TD4 auto suddenly went into engine run on, rev'ing madly. I switched off but it ran on pouring out smoke I somehow managed to stall it and found all the oil had been sucked from the sump. RAC rescued me to my local garage saying probally Turbo had gone and it was burning the sump oil. Anyway garage called todat to say they had disconnected the turbo refilled the oil and engined started and ran but it still consumed the sump oil. Garage advised cost to further investigate would be too costly as just replacing the turbo may not solve the issue. Does anyone have any advice? I can't afford a replacement engine but I am capable of rebuilding if viable.
Any help most gratefully accepted.

Either the turbo seals have gone or you have another fault.

if the engine ran away you may be looking at recon engine

Not sure how they would have disconnected the turbo, but what ever, they should have been able to identify where the oil was going which would indicate what was wrong. If they noticed oil was still being consumed, then it must have ran for some time. Did they say that it sounded like a rolling barrel of bolts when it ran? If it started and ran there must have been compression so presumably with a replacement turbo it could be used again?

Hi guys, many thanks for such quick replies. I am collecting it tomorrow from the garage and start to investigate myself. I got the message from wife when I got home so might have missed something! But like you have said I thought the turbo seals thus letting engine oil in to the intake. haven't got a clue how they supposedly disconnected the turbo or how long they ran it i'll ask tomorrow. They didn't say it sounded rattly and I did quickly start it for 2/3 seconds before RAC man came to check t wasn't seized it turned over and started and sound quiet so I did get my hopes up.
Do you know if it is possible to run the engine without the turbo (when I get it off) to check if engine is ok?

as long as you seal the oil pressure feed pipe to the turbo, it should be fine to run with turbo missing, obviously it will black smoke a bit because without turbo ramming air it will appear overfuelled.(rich)

If it runs on the oil then the oil must be getting into the intake somehow, can't understand how that can happen without the turbo connected though

My L series did the same and that was due to oil seals.

It ran for another 20k miles afterwards (we won't go into what happened next...)

Through the breather system is the most likely place for oil to be drawn onto the combustion chamber if the turbo has been eliminated.

would not have thought with the turbo disconnected that the engine would have got through much oil on its own unless they ran it for about 24 hours non stop .

The bottom end will fail before the oil runs out

If you managed to stall it quite quickly you should not have to much of a problem have seen two like this both were fine after turbo change both had oil seals gone.

I would check your PCV valve isn't stuck, it should be open at low loads & close off when the induction pressure exceeds the crankcase pressure, if its stuck closed you will have problems at idle / low loads, if its stuck open you will have problems when the boost pressure increases. Also check that the little foam filter next to the valve isn't completely blocked.
Not saying your engine isn't knackered just thinking about what could have caused the Turbo oil seals to fail

They might just be washing their hands of it as it would be a high risk job for them replacing the turbo without knowing for certain if the engine was terminally damaged anyway.

Would also clarify exactly what disconnecting the turbo means? If they have disconnected the oil feed then there could still be quite an accumulation in the system (pipes, manifolds etc.) it doesn't take much to run the engine for a bit. Ideally they should have disconnected the inlet manifold from the turbo.

If you're struggling for funds then suggest you buy a second hand turbo from ebay, fit it and try the vehicle. If the engine is damaged then a second hand one is the cheapest option but can be a bit of a lottery - best to try and get one from a crash car that you can hear before it's removed.

I bought a turbo kit including spindle and seals for about £100 I think.
That was about 6 years ago though...

Many thanks for replies I have got the car home now and will get it over my pit as soon as I clear all the cr*P out of the garage. Thought i'd take turbo off and check how the engine sounds for myself, then maybe get a 2nd hand turbo as suggested here.

the engine has done 62K.

If I suspect the worst i'll stick it on ebay Spares or repair and hope for the best.

I'll update when I know a little more. Anyone have an idea how much a replacement engine is?
