Help please for tow bar electrics for freelander

:confused: Hi all my name is Dave and today have fitted the frame of a new tow bar to my Freelander 1 with the wiring next to do.. My question is ... is there a factory fitted socket any where in the back to just plug the electrics in to to save on cutting and joining wires together. If there is can you please tell me where to locate it as the instructions i have are very vague.. thanks in advance for any advice given . regards Dave ps the freelander is a 04 model

Hello mate, iv just done mine i got a unit with wire and plug all ready to plug in cost about £26. plus p/p off ebay Item number: 220703126640 worked a treat, and the plug your looking for is in the offside rear corner behind the grey plastic cover you will find the spair plug taped up on the back of a metal strut and a hole down below to feed your wire though,you can see that one better by looking up from underneath the o/s/r hope this has been some hope.ps. dont forget the feed the wire though the holding brachet before you pug it in...

I'm looking to fit one to pull a trailer? Did you go for a bar from ebay - seems a few but the vehicle specific kits looked expensive.

I got a bit confused on the diff electrics - what's the most common trailer type 7 or 13 pin?
 
What sort of Freelander do you have and what sort of trailer you going to tow?
I got my towbar of ebay £77.new free p/p and the ecels 7pin £34. and fitted it myself in 1-1/2hrs.

Freelander 1, TD4. I followed that link for electrics and they said that ok for trailer electrics. I'm getting a 10ft ifor for shifting stuff.

Which tow bar did you go for?

Right... The towbar make was A1 Item number: 120620282180 "standered flange type"off ebay £77.31 free P/P this was for the towbar only as i had a ball hitch, but you can order one if ness,if you have ordered the elecs that i told you about,with the freelander plug already on it, you will need a metal bracket to bolt to elecs to the ball hitch,got mine from halfords about £5.00 all the bolts to fit the towbar come with it as well as two to fit the ball on..job done really. ps. dont forget to thread the wirering though the bracket before conect it at up cos i did and had to take the plug apart to fit it on.... Good luck.
 
Any one know how to fit the second white socket electrics for a caravan on a fl1 2000 model any help would be grateful.i all ready have the black socket fitted was just trying to find out how easy it is to fit the white socket

Hi,
I've just fitted an Anchor tow bar with one electric (black) socket, the electrics that came with it are the spade cut in type and with an audible sensor. Reading this site I now find that there is a plug already behind the lights that I could use with the right connection.

If I wire as instructed will the Trailer Light on the dash work or is the Audible Sensor to replace it. I would rather the Trailer Light detector work than have an audile sensor or even better have both working.

Can anyone advise, can I get the other part of the plug to attach, will the Trailerlight on the dash then work and not the audible sensor provided....I'd rather plug into the existing wiring than cut into it.

Please help.

I've recently fitted a tow bar and dedicated 12N (black) and 12S (Grey) electrics to my 2004 Freelander TD4.
I guess your 2000 model will be similar.
You start in the boot, removing trim on the passenger side. The kit includes a relay to switch the supply that is only on when the engine is running. The connections you make at the rear are to the reversing light, an earth point and the relay that you fit to a supplied bracket. You then run three wires forward, under the trim along the bottoms of the doors on the passenger side. One goes across the dash and connects to a spare terminal in the fusebox. This is the one that goes live when the engine is running and operates the relay to make the fridge supply live. The other two wires go through a grommet in the bulkhead on the passenger side and attach to the battery positive via inline fuses.
Non of it is particularly difficult. The worst bit is locating the grommet in the bulkhead. If you have AC it is hidden behind pipes and quite difficult to reach. You have to cut a slit in the grommet and then feed some stiff wire through, then go back in to the car and attach the wires to this and then draw it back through from the engine compartment.

To mount the bar to the body I assume you mean.

The 3 on each side into the chassis rails are M10 X 1.5 X 25mm long.
The 2 that go onto the rear X member are M12 X 1.25 X 75mm long.
All bolts should have 9.8 rating iirc.

Would you know if M10 1.5 X 37 mm be suitable for the 25 mm or would they hit ,

Thank you , I bought a bar but guy never sent the studs , see them on auction at £15 and then you have to wait on them , I am thinking the right hardware shop might sell these , and be cheaper as well .

10 X 1.5 X 37mm should fit but can be cut down if too long.
I seriously doubt your average hardware store will have 12 X 1.25 X 75mm bolts in stock. 12 X 1.25 is an unusual size and often requireds ordering on line.
