Did you change the gearbox as well?? The gearbox between the 4.6 and the 2.5 is different, I dont know exactly how, its longer to start with I think but I should think the parts it uses to mate to the engine must be different as well.

-Wills :)

P.S. WHY on earth would you buy the 4.6 just to convert it to a diesel, surely it would of been better to buy a diesel outright?? What did you do with the old engine and other bits and bobs??

The gearbox ECUs are differrent between V8 and diesels and are not interchangeable, and the V8 uses the 4HP24EH box, the diesel the 4HP22EH, also the V8 flywheel is ~1/2" bigger.

Sounds like maybe you have the wrong gearbox ECU talking to the engne?

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought this was an almost impossible job due to the BECM. From what Ianmjdun is saying, there is much more involved with the mechanics of this sort of swap out too. The BECM is supposed to be vehicle specific, i.e. not interchangeable, although I suspect it can be reprogrammed with the right kit. Sounds as though there are quite a few things to check here and perhaps some diagnostic tools would help. Just for my peace of mind, can you confirm if you replaced the parts mentioned in Ianmjdun's post

hi all ecus and the bcem have been changed and all wiring has been changed and so has the gearbox it has everythink out of the 2.5td in it now but just wont select gear doesnt seem to be engaging cant work it out

i bought the 4.6 lpg'd and the head gasket went an in turn cooked the engine so as i already had the 2.5td rangie that i wrote off i thought i would do the change was all quite easy except for it not engauging gear

Hi

A friend of mine has a Jeep with a simular problem. He sorted it out by the the following:

Jack up the back wheels.
Put the car in park and let it run for 3-5 min.
Go to Neutral and let it run.
Go to 1st, run, 2nd, run, 3rd run.......

After you had all the gears running for a few minutes per gear, it should work.

PS: I know this is for a Jeep, but it mite just work.

hi,

when i had my engine rebuilt and put back in i had the same problem and it was a solenoid on the gearbox.

If you put the car in park does it hold or not?

don't suppose its as easy as fuse under driver seat when in no gears ,so should be space on the top row

finally fixed the range rover :) :D :D :)
it was a cogg in the oil pump that had chipped causing the pump not to work so convertion from 4.6hse to 2.5 dhse is now complete and running great except now have no electric seats:(
