I'd think its the rear diff thats shot from the info you've given.......especially with the smell of oil and knocking from the rear.
You'll get away with 2 tyres if you just get the same make/model as the best 2 matching ones on it.
And hopefully the ird is still ok.

As the others say give bell a ring...they're alwasy really helpful

Really?, if it is the diff would the vcu still need replacing as well??

Sorry about all the Q's

I've spoken to bell, but mainly about the vcu, seems a decent price but he hasn't got the bearings for it, where's the best place for them?

I'm thinking while it's in to get it all sorted properly

I think it's worth taking taking the prop off and fitting the diff, then refit the prop when bells have the bearings in, as their prices are the best.

I want to do it all at once really he'll have the VCU's on tues-weds just no bearings for them.

got the bits roughly lined up at 700 worst case scenario for the the 3, IRD,VCU and Diff.

Any thing else needed, i know about the vcu bearings.

You need to check if the diff has mullered the rear drive shafts. I personally, would strip the whole thing down and assess as I went, get some axle stands from Lidl or aldi, can't remember, for £9. If you weren't too far away, I'd help.

It's probably the vcu that shafted the diff to be honest, but also check diff mounts and vcu bearings just in case. Island 4x4 can get the gkn vcu mounts for you, I'm ordering a drive shaft from there in the morning,
COS NOBODY ON THIS FORUM LIKES TO HELP ME.
They're all bastards, thank the Lord for me.
and chin up, hopefully the vcu /bearings kissed the diff, and the diff tickled the rear shafts and the ird has had a quiet night.
Peace

Can't see any obvious leaks, might be a small leak from the rear of the engine but the roads wet and it's hard to tell can't see anything dripping. it's not really in a position for me to be able to jack it up. Tried pushing it, will move slightly with a clicking noise that seems to be coming from the rear. It's like the handbrake is partially on

Mate, just read this again, get the wheels off the back, remove the drums and double check the shoes haven't shattered

I'm just outside Swindon. so the only certainty at the minute is a replacement VCU. Gonna see if I can get a nice AA man tomorrow to get the prop off so we can get it shifted.

I believe it will still move with a knackered vcu, it's the diff that's causing the hassle.
The main point in removing it is to protect the ird

I'm in Melksham if you need to borrow a couple of axle stands and a trolley jack

Cheers for the offer but had the AA pick it up today and take it to my man for investigation. Had some fun and games getting it on and off the flat bed but the chap did a great job using little plastic skids. Just waiting now for the verdict

Right the findings are in, The IRD has a 4 inch crack in it. The rear diff seems untouched, thankfully maybe have been down to the slow speed of the failure.

I have a VCU on order from BELL Engineering, new vcu bearings and as a precaution i'd ordered a diff mount kit (so will get that lobbed on anayway).

Any recommended breakers for the IRD?

Also would this failure point to me sticking port worns on the front with nearly new tyres on the rear?

It certainly wouldn't have helped and probably finished it off, but something has gone seriously wrong to crack the casting. I'm gutted for you as now you can't exchange the ird at bells. And I'd be very careful buying a second hand ird too, so much so that I can't advise you on it, unless you can find a another shafted one to switch at bells ;-)

Finally picked up my repaired freelander today, labour came in at a quite reasonable £220.

It's had
Refurbed VCU (bell engineering)
Low mileage tested IRD (oil changed before fitting)
New prop bearings/mounts
New rear diff mounts

And for good measure i now have four matching Falken tyres to hopefully stave off any further issues. It drives better, i've now noticed there was a slight vibration through the gearstick before it went bang thats not there now. Talking of "the Bang" here's the pics of the ird, notice the casing is all cracked round the bolts as well
