help no steering!!

hi guys, right baught myself a discovery yesterday (first one ive owned) and checked everythig you all said and thought i got myself an ok deal.brilliant chassis,boot and only slight rust on one wing!well drove it home 50miles fine without any worries,was really happy with it but probably done about 70miles now and whilst driving down our lane home last night the steering just seemed to dissapear i had no control of the car. the steering wheel was now facing left with the car going slightly right?:( :( any ideas what could have happened?i managed to get it home driving very slowly?please tell me its not going to cost loads of money to fix???
any help will be much appreciated!

Sounds like something has come undone/broken.

Get underneath at the front of the car and check to see that the steering box is still connected to the steering box arm and to the rod and to the nearside balljoint.

You need to get under and have a look.
 
Here's a pic of some things to check - BUT, if you don't know what yr doing - get it fixed professionally. A steering fault like yrs can kill you and others so why take the risk?????????????????????????????

cheers for the help guys,i will definately get a professional to do it anyway i had the same thoughts about how dangerous it is just wanted some sort of idea of what it could be. ill get under it and have a look anyway and report back,thanks again.
 
Might be an idea to take some pics and put them up on here so someone might help in pointing anything out that's missing, for example, that you might not notice. If youdo, especially take pics of where any rods and links are ... ;)
 
not just check underneath. also look in the engine bay at the linkages for the steering.
there will be a shaft with a rubber doughnut and a couple of UJ's that runs down from the back of the steering column to the steering box
 
The big nut that holds on the steering arm that is on the steering box has a habit of working loose unless the locking tab is banged down/up properly.

and it needs to be done up to an enormous torque setting - 200 foot/lbs if I remember correctly.
 
right guys just to update you,the aa have taken it to my local garage now and i think he said it was something like the tracking rod end had broken or something like that but the tracking rod was pretty much touching the nearside wheel whilst the other end of i was about 8 inches away from the offside wheel. anyway its with the garage now so will let them fix that and any other problems they may encounter.cheers for all the help though guys!:)

yea i agree i definately want to do some sort of basic mechanics training as i would love to be able to do all the work on my landy in the future,but as i have only just got the disco didnt want to start playing with the stering myselfas i feel its too dangerous and risky if i was to get it wrong.im currently learning to weld so its a start though right?lol:confused:

Wasnt meant as an insult mate, but if the track-rods r pointing in different directions then..........
Totally agree, i f u dont know wot ur up to then u shouldnt be touching a steering fault.
Good luck with it any way - a course might have bin cheaper than ur garage bill is gunna be tho.......
 
For that to just snap is very unusual, get yourself and your car down to a reputable garage and have it re-MOTed now, just to be on the safe side you understand.
