Help Needed!! Trying to fit steering guard

Hi All

I am trying to fit a steering guard to my discovery 200tdi K plate.
But i am unable to get this one last bolt out. (as seen in photo)

I can get the nut off and hit with a big hammer and the bolt moves about 3mm but then no more. I can turn the bolt with a large bar on the end of socket but does not free up or come out.

Can anyone help?

I had the same problem with the steering box bolt when I fitted my steering guard. Have you tried squirting it with generous amounts of 'plus gas' or 'wd40' and then rotating the bolt one way and then the other. keep lubing and rotating for a good 5 or 10 mins. When you can feel the bolt has freed off a bit screw the nut loosely back onto the end of the bolt and then hit it with a number 1 persuasion tool while still rotating it with the socket. keep lubing, hitting and rotating and with a bit of patience it will start to move for you.
 
jack up the motor, take the wheel off, get some ear protection and wallop away.Bigger ammer is better and colourful language helped when i had to do mine.If yer start getting ****ed off with it go have a brew and a siggy and try again after.
The reccommended phrase on here was "take this you fooking bastid." Repeat as nessacccery.
 
What Ratty said, they're a right PITA to get off, ideally you want two people on the job, one rotating and squirting, the other ****ting it .. hard!!
 
Keep at it. Mine started out thoroughly seized in the hole. The heat it up and throw water at it trick got it turning, (thanks Sean). Since then, after mucho hammering, I've got it to move about an inch and a half. It stops dead just after the end of the bolt disappears into the chassis.

I'm going to get another bolt before I have another go at it. It's starting to look a bit knackered! I've even thought about cutting the head off it and knocking it through the other way. That's probably another can of worms.....

I sheared mine and drove it out towards the engine, away from the wheel.Werent easy n me arm ached after giving it some beans with the club ammer.perserverance and swearing will do it eventually
 
take it too a garage once you get the new bolt and ask nicely if they will bang it out with the air gun! normally works, then slip in the new bolt and go home to do your job. When I left the trade i got stuck so much with s**t like this I got a compresser, if the impact gun wont move it you know your in trouble.
 
been there, done that!

I ended up cutting the head off and banging it thru the other way. Replaced with a nice new bolt.

PS I tried massive lump hammers and just bent the bolt!

And there lies your problem.

Once you have the bolt out that far you lube it right up and bang it back in again. then you bang it back out again. And then you lube it right up and bang it back in again. Repeat procedure as many times as neccesary. Whenever the bolt moves make sure you give it a couple of turns too to help disperse the rust and crud.

Yep, I spent all afternoon doing exactly that. When the bolt's all the way in it's so loose you can turn it with your fingers. Still won't come out though, a couple of taps get's it to where it stops moving then that's your lot. Having said that I've been trying to get the bolt out without destroying it. Once I've got a new one to put in I'll visit some proper violence on the old one! :)
