Help Needed for a visit

1000 klms into the WA Outback from Perth
G'day guys...it seems I will be alighting on your shores all the way from the Aus Outback on or about the middle of April next year, and I was looking for a bit of advice. (yeah yeah.."stay home!" I hear you advise :p)

We are looking at a driving holiday south from London to the coast, along the bottom, then up through Salisbury, Wales, (Going through Prestatin..isn't that your stomping grounds Yella?) across to visit family in Barnsley, then onto York, up to Scotland, to Edinburgh, Inverness and fly out of Glasgow.

So...what I need help with is a (serious) suggestion of what would be the best vehicle to hire for 4 weeks or so. I have been looking at a 4 cyl diesel vauxhall station wagon (estate?) but thought something a bit bigger and more comfy for three of us. We will be on motorways and back roads a bit I believe. I know it will be a far cry from the roads out here where we drive straight for a few hundred klms then stop and take a photo of a bend in the road, then drive on. :D

What do ya reckon?
 
think it mite help if yu said how many peeps are in the party and wot yu wanna do while you are here. Just motoring from a to b, or a bit of orfroading. do yu need alot of room for suitcases or wot - too many unanswered q's to advise.
 
Don't think you could go wrong with a disco. but cost could be an issue, hiring and running. Don't know what you pay for fuel out there but diesel could be over £1.00 per litre by the time you get here. would have thought any diesel estate would be comfartable and roomy enough for three with luggage. Audi a6 is nice but could be pricey.
 
How big is a Vectra?..are they the ones they race in the BTCC?
Was looking around the hire companies and there was a SAAB 9.5 2.3 litre estate. Is that bigger than a Vectra? I imagine it would have a few more bells and whistles. Couldn't find any of the large hire companies that had Discos :( I thought a D3 might have been good.

Any help would be appreciated guys :)

Might have to go light on the xmas pressies this year ..

many times we've been away for a weekend in the disco we set the satnav for shortest route home, we've discovered some great little villages and sights in the UK which we simply wouldnt have come accross if we were navigating with maps...would recommend getting a satnav for your trip or loading up the UK maps if you have a tomtom etc... you will certainly discover something or somewhere that wasn't in your shedule...

as for a car, I had a ford mondeo for the last year and for munching miles with comfort, toys and plenty of torque the diesel estate version maybe in the running for you.

it was a few years ago now that I drove around australia in a beat up old panel van; huge milages, long straight roads and very very hot... not the same here though, buy an umbrella!!!

just got rid of my vectra hatchback ('99 petrol ) last month to get the disco - had that for 5 years & great to drive with plenty of room for 3 plus luggage

the new Vectra's are better & bigger than mine was so the estate should do you OK - or Ford Mondeo diesel estate or how about a people carrier (MPV) ?

petrol's bound to be over £1/L by then - best to go for diesel if your doing that sort of mileage

reckon you're lookin at about £1000 - £1200 to hire a mondeo/vectra for 4 weeks , £1200 to £1500 for a ford Galaxy/renault mpv - but over £2000 for a 4x4

Got the umbrella already!!! Was thinking about a satnav in case I get lost. :D
Mondeo's keep coming up on the listings..might have to check them out further..thanks ;)

I thought about an MPV but aren't they pretty sluggish? I imagine the visibility would be better, and that was why I thought a 4x4 would be better given the lack of familiarity with the region and the finer points of the road rules...Outback dweller here remember:p I think they price themselves out of the picture though.

Got quotes of between 900 and 1200 pounds which is about what I budgeted on. I think I might have to take everyone's advice and go with a deisel, despite the Saab 9.5 looking good.
