Gents,

In a typical example of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing, I thought I would follow some of the ideas in this thread:

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f10/black-smoke-p38-2-5-dse-81223.html

about how to reduce the black smoke dumping out of the Rangie whenever I go above about 3100rpm. I intend to clean/replace the intercooler shortly, so this was the first step...

Well, I duly disconnected the vacuum pipe to the EGR from the EGR Vacuum Pump and took the Rangie for a drive..... All was fine for the first 5 minutes, then as I increased the revs past 3000rpm, there was a popping noise and I lost power. I managed to limp home (rather embarrassingly) with the revs bouncing between 1500-1800rpm, a burning smell and clouds of smoke whenever I put it under any kind of load - for instance pulling up a slight incline. There was also a sort of sucking noise...

Now I'm assuming (bearing in mind here that I've stated that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing) that I've blown a hose somewhere - but any idea which one?? I can't immediately see anything, although it is dark outside (yes, I used a torch)....

Can anyone help? I'm getting it in the ear from the Missus giving it "I told you so" etc....!!!

Yeah, without a doubt - but with the pregnancy hormones raging at the moment, she'd kick the bejesus out of me....

LOL - she is still going on at me.....

Moan Moan Moan, whinge whinge whinge - anyone would think its her car...

Oh, bugger it is.....

Well, the diagnosis was correct - twas the Turbo Hose.

Luckily its not split, it had just blown off the Turbo - I guess the jubilee clip wasn't done up tight enough. So I've replaced the clip (it had disappeared) and all now seems ok..

Out of interest, why would removing the EGR Vac hose cause this? Or was it just a horrible coincidence?

possibly becasue you have just changed something that landrover spent a considerable amount of time and money developing on the say so of a bunch of (albeit very experienced) amateurs... who knows what it might do..

but at least you're sorted now.. did it make the least bit of difference to your black smoke?
