Me yet again!
As you'll know I'm swopping engines between my two Discoverys. Now on removing the clutch cover, seemed a good idea to replace the clutch while the engine's out, I find that there is play between the two parts of the flywheel. A little in rotation and about an 1/8 inch in and out. There was some "shiny dust" round the clutch splines! I'll try and add photos.
Question: should I need to replace the flywheel do I go for a replacement "duel mass" or go for one of the solid conversion jobs? Heard mixed opinions on this, I should add that I use the car only on the road and to tow a heavy caravan.
Any opinion expressed gratefully received.
Mac.

I can' tell you if it's shot or not what i can tell is that i had a solid one fitted to my D2 also based on mixed impressions and i had to pay again for the whole job and new DMF in less than a month cos i was fed up with vibrations and noise at medium to higher speeds

How many miles has the clutch/ flywheel done? The flywheels are usually OK up to 100K. If it is near this it will be false economy only renewing the clutch and I agree with sierraferry, don't fit a solid flywheel, as it will destroy your transmission, particularly when towing a heavy caravan.

I have been told by somebody who rebuilds LRs for a living that he wouldn't bother doing a clutch without doing the flywheel at the same time. Unless the flywheel is of course reasonably new, in which case should have done the clutch at the same time.
But that's just in his personal/professional opinion

IMO it's a proffesional position though not the cheap option but the best thing you can do provided you are using quality/OEM/genuine parts cos then both the clutch and flywheel should last 100K and when the clutch will start slipping the flywheel will be "tired" as well and it might not last untill a hew clutch will wear out again then you'll have to remove the gearbox only for that... that's how i've done and will do next time when the clutch wears out

False economy not to do it at the same time - good brand dual mass not too much, and definitely NOT solid flywheel as said - horrible, and will destroy transmission.... Good luck, A
