I have a 12 year old Range Rover 4.6 HSE. Its my beloved car and has always been reliable.......until 3 days ago...

After driving 100 miles, I suddenly noticed that the temperature gauge had shot to the red and the warning light came on. I was on the motorway at the time, so couldn't pull over. I put the heating on full power and the gauge gradually went back to midway.

I was only 6 miles from home and fortunately made it back, although the warning light came on and off all the way.

There was no visible steam and the car has been left until today.

After checking the coolant compartment (it was a little low) and topping it up, I drove a maximum of 6 miles locally. The gauge remained halfway, as it normally is, and there were no warning lights or anything to indicated it was overheating.

It wasn't until I parked the car in the garage that the steam started coming through from the bonnet. On closer inspection, the I could see the water in the coolant compartment bubbling furiously and the floor of the garage had water everywhere, not just a dribble.

I've looked at the oil cap and there is a tiny amount of 'gunk' in the lid, but nothing major. (this I did the other day when the engine was cold).

Can anyone advise me whether this sounds like a head gasket or whether its likely that a pipe to the coolant compartment has broken or split? I know its an impossible diagnosis online, but I just need an idea.

The last thing I can afford right now is a hefty garage bill - I'm only just beginning to get back on my feet working part-time after being off the last 15 months with Breast Cancer.

My second request.....does anyone know a reliable Land Rover mechanic/garage in the Barnet, Herts area?

Many thanks and fingers crossed someone can help me. My beloved car has looked after me as I have it. It's not worth anything, its 12 years old, but it has low mileage (84,000), is in excellent condition and would break my heart to have to lose it.

hi emma d.check the pipe that goes from the top of the rad to the header tank, make sure it is not blocked,if it is clear it out with an airline and see if that helps.if not it maybe hgf or porus block syndrome.
