hello all

i have a discovery 2 td5 2004 auto

i have the dreeded sport and manual gearbox lights on my dash and now it will only go into gear very rarely

i am staying in italy for another 2 months and have to drive back after that, and my nearest dealer is about a 4 hour drive away and i cant get me landy there so if its likely to be the switch on the side of the gear box, i shall order it from rimmer bros.

just a couple of quick questions

1) is the switch thing on the side of the gearbox likely to be at fault or what else could it be

2) if so is the part easy to fit

3) will i need to plug the car into a computer to reset it

4) overall is it possible to change the part urself

i am farly confident with cars and fitting parts.

thanks for all ur help

mike

if youve a cat on it gets in the way and need the exhaust pulling off

other than that if youve got finger like a pianist its a piece of cake

You mean something like.....

“yes dost done mine, not reset required”

Translation: I have just replaced the aforementioned component on my vehicle. Access to a computerized fault diagnosis tool is not required in order to extinguish the warning indicators.

”it it an arse but do able”

Translation: It is an extremely disagreeable task, however if one has the mental fortitude required in order to be able to apply the necessary patience then it is possible for the determined DIY mechanic to complete the operation.

”if youve a cat on it gets in the way and need the exhaust pulling off”

Translation: If your vehicle is fitted with a catalytic converter it will hamper access to the component that is to be replaced. Removing the complete exhaust system would be most advantageous.

”other than that if youve got finger like a pianist its a piece of cake”

Translation:

If you are blessed with the kind of manual dexterity that would often be ascribed to a concert pianist then the task becomes relatively easy.

The first version's a lot quicker to type though.... :)

I'm used to doing quite a lot of translation work myself, but it's never as much fun as reading yours - well done :D:D:D

or if you take it to a stealers

“yes dost done mine, not reset required”

Translation: We will have to put it on the diagnostics computer anyway.

”it it an arse but do able”

Translation: We charge by the hour and it's going to take at least 4 hours

”if youve a cat on it gets in the way and need the exhaust pulling off”

Translation: woohoo, I'm off to the Bahamas for my holiday this year. Oh by the way, it's an additional 2 hours labour

”other than that if youve got finger like a pianist its a piece of cake”

Translation:

One of our spanner monkeys will have to remove the entire exhaust system, gearbox before we replace the part.

oh thank god for that, i can do it meself.
