hay im new to this site but maybe some one can help me in here. My tachometer doesnt work at all and i am hoping to try and fix it this week. its a 95 land rover discovery 2.5tdi. Ive put a new battery in and nothing else seems to be wrong except the brake lights dont work but i have a feeling the bulbs are gone cause none of the fuses are broke. Any way is this problem caused by the alternator? if so is it a big job to recondition the alternator.(i do have a bit of a tech head ) thanks for your help any way
:D

alternator re-conditioning isn't a massive job if you have the right tools, you will need a big vice, a metal turning lathe, a press and a test bench, plus you will need the parts to re-con it like bearings, rotor if the windings have gone, regulator etc, the easiest way to do it is to drop it off to an auto electrician and let them do it, or buy a reconditioned on from them on an exchange basis

i'm pretty sure the tach runs off the alternator position W on them so it is very possible, the brake lights could have been blown by the alternator overcharging, but it would normally blow all the electrical devices connected at the time rather than just one, (i have seen an alternator write off a car before as it killed all the electrical equipment and the cost to replace it was greater than the cars value) check the brake light switch is working too if the bulbs are fine

If I were you I would check and remake the connection on the alternator that feeds the thin wire to the rev counter. It's usually a poor connection that causes the problem. It's a single spade connector.
