i was just scrubing up the diffs to put diff guards on with a stiff brush and i have cleaned of a bit of rust that was holding in the oil it is now seeping oil out of a tiny hole. what should i do? metal glue to block the hole?

thanks

I had that years ago on my old D1 on the front diff, I cleaned the area up drained the oil cut the rusty area out as didnt want it to break up and contaminate the oil and welded a plate over it and painted it :0)

The diff casing would have to be absolutely oil/grease free for it to work and it would depend on the size of the hole, I tried it and it lasted all of a few days before leaking again. Could always weld a patch over it, personally I ended up getting a new diff pan welded on. Most expensive and bothersome option but no more leaky diff:)

the size of the hole i tiny i only just spotted it when i was looking for it, monkey 13 when you say cut the rusty bit i cant as the whole things rusted up. so i should really get a new diff pan but im skint so mite have to try glue if not then ill guess ill have to try patch it up.

Drill it out to 3 or 4 mm, tap it and stick a screw in with lots of loktite

you know what thats not a bad idea but i fear that if i drill it, it may fall apart lol or a selftapping screw maybe. well ive bought some epoxy resin stuf so im gonna giv that a go tomos (fingers crossed) if that fails ill try your screw idea.

monkey 13 i live in great milton

I used chemical metal on mine.
I drained the oil 1st, then used a hot air gun to dry it, and whacked on chemical metal.

Hmm, self tapper and some gasket goo, good idea. I patched up my central heating once like that after an embarrassing incident with a loose floorboard...

if the epoxy resin works should i give it a coat of hammerite or waxoyl to slow down the rust on the rest of it? which is best, as i will be putting a diff guard on to stop the resin getting knocked.

what if you fill the gap between the pan and the guard with expanding foam, that would stop mud getting in and easyish to take off if needs be

Might stop mud but not water which will then just sit there eating away at the diff pan. I brush mine with used engine oil seems to be keeping them rust free.

well ive done the epoxy resin and been on a test drive and as i write this all is well, its worked for now :D:D:D ill giv it a couple of days and if it is still holding up ill stick the guard on to stop it getting knocked
