First off, hello everyone!

I'm new to Landrovers and therefore clueless, so please go fairly easy on me:)

I'm currently looking for a Defender for my girlfriend. She's a vet nurse and her little Clio isn't really up to the job. We also need to be able to tow a boat so it should fit the bill perfectly.

We've got an idea in our heads of what we (think) we want:
TD5 Defender 90
Later than Y2k
Ideally on a galvanised chassis

Does this sound reasonable? We've been talking to Landrovers UK who seem very helpful (any experiences of them on here?) and they have a couple that seem to fit the bill, however the one has a galvanised chassis and bulk head, and the other doesn't. An easy choice I hear you say, but there's a price difference of nearly £2k (both are over our original budget of £8k!). My main question is is it worth paying the extra for the 2000 TD5 with galvanised bits, or in reality should the X-tech on a standard chassis last us for years to come?

Like I said, sorry for all the questions, but any knowledge you feel like passing on would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, she had a decent test drive in the X-tech one a couple of weeks ago. She got on well with it.
She realises it's probably not going to be as comfortable to drive as her Clio, but it fits in with our lifestyle so much better. My car has no boot to speak of and only two seat with nowhere for the dog, so a Landy really does make sense.

you have to ask why has a defender that is only 8 years old had its chassis replaced?

either the previous owner had more money than sense
or it was a rust bucket

do you plan on keeping it that long to get the benefit of a galvanised chassis?
my defender is 22 years old and its chassis hasnt been patched or replaced

Thanks for that. Apparently it is the original chassis, just galvanised for the sake of it, so maybe your 'more money than sense' theory rings true. It's good to hear that they'll last 20+ years without falling apart. Maybe not having one isn't the deal breaker we first thought.

where is it for sale, generally the regular 4x4 places with a decent rep are known to the forums.

I'd go over it with a fine tooth comb as an after market chassis may have been stamped.
I don't know about later models but my defender has chassis build date on the inside approx 8-12 inches back from transmission brake on both sides.

Thanks fanatic.

It's for sale by 'Landrovers UK'. I'm told they're very reputable. Any experience with them?

Id be tempted to look around a bit, theres a fair few for sale whether you go to dealers or ebay (i know not some peoples idea of a good place but ive never had a prob), take someone who knows about defenders, a few beer tokens and you will soon find someone here.

If the prices are 2k apart..then i'd go for the cheaper one and then get it professionally wax-oyled...saves you 1500 quid...

They are not a million miles from me, others have commented on top money prices they charge.

That said other forum members have said that their work is good and the vehicles are of a very high standard.

Get in drive-type vehicles-most of us here fettle ours regularly.

Not Personally experienced them, but as I say have not heard any bad things said about them.

(that was to your mrs, btw, cos it's HER Landy!! )

Yeah right...til it says 'oink' and he has to get his hands dirty, Dirty..

ExSqueeze me Nogbad???? Who did all the work to her own Landy for her MOT?
....and who sent his Bimmer, cough.. to the garage recently???? :p :p :p The laydee is used to shoving her hand up cows' bums; a few spanners and a bit of oil aren't going to frighten her!!

Well I wasnt meaning you...but as HE is posting it means either

a) She is leaving it up to him

or

b) shes not allowed near the keyboard cos the keys get sticky from bovine bottom bovril..
