hi every one i have a 1980 series 3 with a 2.25 diesel
im trying to fit a revometer its a neg earth one does any one know how i wire it up / also a amp meter please

A short description of how to wire in an ammeter or voltmeter for your car.

The ammeter shows direction and rate of current to and from thebattery. Under normal conditions, the meter should show a (small) charge. This will be higher after starting, but probably never more than 10A, and often about 1A. If you see a discharge reading (other than maybe at tickover) you're running on borrowed time.

The voltmeter also indicates whether the battery is being charged. A reading of ~12V indicates that there is no current flowing into or out of the battery. Less than 12V indicates discharge (typically 8V when cranking the starter) and 13-14V is a healthy charging voltage. More than 15V when charging indicates a faulty regulator on the alternator.

A voltmeter actually shows more information than the ammeter, and is also safer to wire in since it takes next to no current and this allows the use of a small (1A or less) fuse. The ammeter needs to take the full normal load. This is 30A or so for a Landy, but add a few extra lights etc. and it could be more.

Here's an artistic pic. of how both could be wired in.

If you burn out your wiring loom, please print out this web-page and tear it up into little pieces.

rev counter is usually connected to Alternator (if yu got one).

it will have, but unless it's been fitted with a more modern alt it wont have the correct lug externally avaliable so he'd have to tap off the windings - which is a arse to do properly

why do peeps fit ammeters ?

ammeter will show you if you are in a negative electrical power situation in real time the voltmeter is less instant . ( more or less)

Speaking of which, my 1982 ex mil 12v, not FFR, came with an ammeter, looks pretty original not a 3rd party job, might be mistaken, but it looks original. Its in the centre of the dash at the botton of said dash. Could anyone tell me if its a standard fit or not?

What Wires Do I Conect My Revmeter T On Alternator Looks Like I Have 3 One Thick One & 2 Thiner Ones All Going To Starter

3 thick ones go to battery/starter motor one thin one goes to ign warning light, the other thin one shud go to rev counter. Best to tell us wot make and model alternator yu got, so that it can be confirmed tho.

I'm no electrician but for some reason an ammeter is not recommended with an alternator, which is why manufactures went over to voltmeters (normally described as battery condition gauges)
My first car (A35) had a speedo and a fuel gauge. I can see the use of a temp gauge (almost all problems will result in the temp rising, if only because the engine is working harder), that seems to be enough to me.
