Help!! EGR removal question

Hi, hope this is the right place to ask this question..only just joined so sorry if not! We have recently purchased a discovery td5 (53 plate) with a replacement engine from an 01 model. Had a breakdown due to water hose coming off (clipped together where egr had been removed). It was repaired at the roadside but then started cutting out under load. We booked it into a garage at our destination who thought that the ecu had been contaminated with oil (maybe water because it had blown it everywhere). Anyway seems fine now but on getting someone else to look at it when home they say the problem is caused because models 02 onwards do not support egr removal so I guess this ecu is trying to manage something not there? Any help appreciated.
