Hi Guys. Firstly im fairly new. I first used the site as a reference point as i bought a 2.5 v6 auto petrol, eeeek. Straight from the off i had problems. I noticed some oil on the floor where i parked. I'm a stickler for this sort of thing so had it fully checked and there where 2 engine leaks. One by the Cams, and another was on the rocker, so i am told, im a complete plank with this sort of stuff. So hence i wanted to get it sorted. I was told by my main garage it was a auto box leak so needed a auto specialist. I found a great guy who said, Nah,, its the leaks i described earlier. So he said take it to your garage and tell em what i said, or do you want me to do it. He did it and replaced timing belts ect that were covered in oil and worth doing while he was there. And i have to say it was costly, but is now sorted.
Then i had a strange feeling that the breaks were sticking. I took it to my garage and yep, discs , pads, and 1 caliper required. tut. So ok i think i have paid lots on this now but its sorted. Nope how wrong. The fella at the garage says, its juddering slightly when he puts his foot down. I said dont then but he seemed to think it may be prop shaft.
Also it makes a tinkling sound that has been diagnosed as loose baffles in the mid exhaust, BASICALLY GUYS..... WHAT THE FOOOK HAVE I BOUGHT. lol. I bought this for £2k, and a astra van y reg. 65k miles, and have spent near to £1 k in repairs in the first couple of months. Am i in for more pain or shall i get rid. I have to say i really like it, but divorcing the missus and loosing half of everything would be cheaper. Help me out, will i learn to love it or have to bin it?????

Freelanders, part n parcel, got a td4, got rid of my v6, loved petrol way to much, head gasket failure too, got rid cos that woulda been a 1300 nicker job to fix.. Best of luck... Decisions Decisions .

If you want a car that is in show room condition then maybe a landy is not for you.
With the k series 2.5 the next joys could be the head gaskets or liners slipping, not to mention the IRD and VCU, it could be better letting it move on to a new home.

Simple answer: stop taking it to the garage. If you do that then yeh it's going to cost you **** loads. Learn to do as much as you can yourself and we're always here to help :).

Have to agree (tho never owned V6). Unless you have deep pockets or you can do the jobs yourself, this could be a money pit - sorry to have to say!! You have to be realistic when paying small money for a big car!

Have to aggree - unless it's a reasonably new TD4 you're going to have some nasty expenses. All oder ones will probably have some degree of transmission wear and the petrol ones are just not good for non DIY owners. If you can DIY they are cheap as chips to fix though apart from recon transmission parts which do cost a bit.

most of the jobs on the freelanders are very doable:cool:get yourself the haynes manual a good set of tools ,some good qaulity axle stands and start with things like brakes and servicing.with over 70% of all land rovers still in use today someones keeping them on the road;)

they were after the technology but didn't use anywhere else, as far as i've seen.

the krauts used it but not very well in their cars :)

I kind of don't agree with the liners bit tbh. The KV6 is a good engine but sadly there are a couple of seemingly minor things that can turn into a major disaster!! The thermostat is sealed with O rings which is a rubbish way to seal it. If you change the thermostat complete with it's O rings or at least the O rings when the coolant is changed then this does seem to improve things. It's very important to make sure the water level is at max or you are asking for trouble. By far the best way to look after a Freelander is the Diy way. The parts are pretty cheap but garage labour is a killer ;)

Okay. Great insight all thank you. I have to be honest i may have to move her on. Shame cause its a real nice tidy example. But i cant be having the headache. But at the same time i love the freelander. So will have to get me a td4, Will have to be a used though. So what reg onwards do you think is safest. 03 onwards or newer.

2001 onwards I thik they are the same. You will still need to be wary of transmission problems and you will probably still need a new VCU and possibly tyres.

Ahh i see. Maybe i should cut my jibber jabbering and buy me a haynes manual and man up and give stuff a go. At the end of the day i have most of the tools required from my line of work. I think i may keep the freelander i have a and tinker with it and give it something to complain about. Hey maybe it will be nice to me in the end so i leave it alone.

On another but sort of linked note, and I will look for a thread containg in forum, but i know i need a new exhaust as the baffles are rattling in the mid section. Is this a straight forward job. A good place to start maybe????

Reasonably easy yes, much easier if the eggsauce isn't really rusty. Lots of good vids on youtube about doing that.

Sensible idea keeping it, Hippo has a H6 and he lloves it and knows everything there is to know about them. Others with V6's here too with alot of knowlege.

95% of the freelanders out there will need some money throwing at them to begin with but once the transmission is sorted it's usually just niggles. If you add your location to your profile you may well find you are near someone you can buddy up with :).

Age is irrelevant. It's far more important that the car has been looked after correctly. On the whole though if you are wanting a car that you can simply drive without little or sometimes big things going wrong then you would be better off with a Honda Civic. For me it has to be a V6 Freelander!!
