Help! done head gasket and still using coolant!

i have a 200 'x' plate frreelander. Ive owned it for around 3 months now and in that time had plenty of problems lol
when it good i love it and when its bad im putting it on ebay tonight lol!

Anyway my main issue and the reason im here tonight it this. As the post says i have replaced the head gasket in it and it is still using coolant. Could anyone shed some light as to what it might be? Cost me a small fortune to get the head done and dont want to be running into huge repair bills, so please say its something simple.

Any advise greatly appreciated. Claire
 
Sequential HGF? Tiz common :(.

Or heater Matrix - put yo hand under centre of dash - if carpet is damp - theres yo problem.

Or cracked coolant tank - common problem.

Or cracked coolant tank cap - common problem.

or cracked thermostat housing - common problem.
 
So its terminal you think?

I shall get hubby to investigate further in the morning, but the fact that none of us are mechanically minded (and hes on night shift) would be good to have somewhere to start.
The knee deep snow dont help either!

No idea - depends what it is :D.

check the above, starting with the cheapest first.

get a pressure test done and a sniffer test, then report back.
 
Dreading telling hubby lol any excuse to get rid, he didnt want it in the first place. Shall do what you said and report back.

Let me guess, a 1.8?

Unfortunately they're very well known for blowing head gaskets - they are pretty much 100% guaranteed to suffer a HGF at one point or another.

I am inclined to agree with the above - it sounds like your head has warped or cracked. This can be repaired but unfortunately is quite expensive and is unlikely to make economical sense if the car is an older model... :(
 
before the thermostat housing, I would look at the coolant expansion tank, as it's easiest.

located on the left hand side as you look under the bonnet from the front of the car looking back, nearly at windscreen level.

look for any stains or marks on the outside of the tank, particularly orange ones, like a crystal deposit. also look for fine fractures/cracks around the neck of the bottle where the lid screws on. finally, run the engine up to temperature and look at the bottle (ffs, don't take the cap off when it's hot, boiling hot coolant will **** out everywhere, especially over the hand that is unscrewing it), then check for a kind of hot sweet smell around the bottle, which indicates coolant is escaping.

depending on the mileage and having disturbed the cambelt to fix the head it could be water pump leaking,
also if it was never bled thoroughly head gasket could fail fairly quickly.
 
Sounds pretty stupid but check the coolant hoses have been properly tightened, I've seen a friend dismatle everything to redo the head for a 2nd time in a week only to discover that somebody else hadn't tightened the coolant hoses :doh::rolleyes: *cough 08Mckerp remember this?! cough* :D:D
 
not had the chance to further investigate, but if it was a cracked or warped head would they not have noticed that when they done head gasket, as its literally only a fortnight since that was done. Thanks claire
