I have just bought my 2nd discovery, this one is a 3.9 V8 auto, i have changed he gear box oil as one of the cooler pipes was shot, however since i have done that when the car is up to temp she clunks when selecting the gears and sort of jolts into gear, she don't do this when she is cold, i checked and double checked that the gear box oil was the right stuff, is this the gear box or transfer box? i haven't checked the transfer box since ive got her HELP!!

Did you change the filter as well? Could be blocked hence the problems you are getting. Is the level still correct in the box?

Only u can tell us which box the sound is coming from.
When hot the transfer box will clunk when selecting reverse but that's it. You shouldn't have any sounds when the auto box is doing it's thing and changing gear.

Very hard to block an auto box filter as it's only a metal screen.

the oil was a grey colour so as far as i am aware not many changes have been done although the car has fair millage (135k) and seems to have been well looked after. i did not change the filter as i was told this would not make any difference :S and yes the oil level is correct, took me a while with a lot of draining off filling up again but eventually got there lol this noise only happens on selecting drive or reverse when warm, gear changes are smooth when driving, however sometimes i feel she takes a long time to change down to 2nd from 1st and on kickdown she will hit the limiter and not change up unless you ease off the gas :\ not sure if this is normal for a disco or if theres an underlying problem?

My understanding is ATF should always be red (dexron spec) or if there's a problem brownish and smells burnt, but grey?

It seems the question is... have you owned a V8 auto before? if no and you want the in and outs on the operation of your auto box it's all in the RAVE workshop manual.

Selecting D can be harsh if the engine idle speed is to high.
The gearbox does hold in second slowing down, before at crawling speed it drops into first at the last moment when for example stopping a traffic lights.
When accelerating in kickdown the gearbox doesn't lock up until you ease off.

Now back to work.:D
