Hi all,
I have a 300tdi which has no rails on the roof. I have 'paid £10.00 for a pair of flebay, before looking in to it. I am no stranger to getting my hands dirty, BUT, I thought it maybe just the case of marking out and drilling the roof carefully (headlining down first), the two locating lugs on the front of the rails are round and the locating lugs on the back elongated. The problem I can see is the bolts that have been supplied have a washer attached, the washer is the same diameter as the lugs, so obviuosly they would only tighten up onto the rails and not the roof.
Do you think I have been given the wrong bolts or am I missing some kind of fixing clamp? Before all you wise guys start on about why would I. Simple... personally I think the disco looks better, my thoughts and also I have a very expensive thule roof box, bars and bike attachments that I have used on my previous two non LR estate cars. If anybody has done this, I would appreciate some advise. cheers, Mark.

Thanks for the quick response, it's a cost thing. Impending wedding means no spare cash..lol. This did look the cheaper option but again, if anyone has attempted it I would be interested to know how they got on. cheers.

not done it myself but i think theres some reinforcing on the underside of the roof and you drill up through the holes in that..... the standard rails and crossbars arnt that strong.... i often use gutter mounted bars if ive got a long ladder or something substantial up there.

The crossbars I have are thule lockable bars with a large thule box.. I have laid the ebay standrad rails buy the side of the box and crossrails in the garden today and I can place the crossrails right at each corner of the rails so i think this should be fine. Besides, three suitcases would be the maximum load. and if all else fails I can go for the stronger gutter mounted ones at a later date.

Its not much help to you, I know, but I have always had a problem with making MORE holes in a disco . They seem to leak a surprising amount with any help . I understand what you are saying about the temporary nature of this fit and the cost issue though.Good luck.

Thx, Discool that was the answer I was looking for. Like to think it was just the case dropping the headlining. But looking at all the bits of trim holding it up then it maybe a longer job than I thought. thanks again for all your help. I have no sunroofs and lining is sagging at little where the roofs should be, so i may be able to kill two birds with on stone.
