HI ALL

just been to get fuel and my 300 tdi disco all of a sudden would not change gear would only go into 1st when i took it out of 1st it ground back into it would not go into any others stick went very stiff to any idears PLEASE .

what im trying to get at is if clutch is buggered gear lever will still move to each gear but wouldnt go in either grate or jam ,if part of bias plate has come apart and jamming gear stick you wouldnt have full movement of stick

all it will do, is move from neutral into first, it will pull away in first once it comes to change gear you press the cluch and it wont go into any other gear until its almost at walking pace, then it go back into first at a grind.

if you what ,so no other movement is possible if so remove consol ,rubber gaiter and cover from selector housing and check bias plate/springs etc ,it is possible youve pulled selector pin out of selector forks in which case box will need stripping to realign

the box will return to normal after a period of time, as if nothing has happened, eg, it wont change to any gear so we stoped in first for 3/4 of a mile, then it returned to normal.

you need to help a little ,like giving full symptom list ,only going into 1st as if clutch wasnt clearing enough to get other gears is different than restricted movement of gear stick

what i was trying to get at is whether fault with box or clutch ,there are a few reasons why stick may go stiff in box where you cant even align for selection ,differently if its clutch making stiff selection which a clutch that was dragging would cause similar to trying to change without using clutch which do you think

you can remove consol ,rubber gaiter and tin cover over gear box top and check lower lever operation ,bias springs and plate, you can remove top and check yoke on selector shaft which has a ball socket for lever ,

well im unsure frim your description ,but if its gearbox lever can be effected by grooves worn in lower levr by bias springs which hold lever in alignment with 3rd and 4th gear this alignment is critical for good gear changes ,bias plate holds springs in the right place and upright tab that holds springs often breaks and loose part can jam lever and loose alignment ,ball in yoke on selector can seize making selection difficult and also with grub screw coming loose can fall out of yoke but this makes selection difficult and sloppy, sometimes general stiffness with gears can be improved with fresh mtf 94 oil
