Help advice pls reqd steering wheel change

Hi all

i really hate my freelander steering wheel as wish to replace it with another but with out the airbag. can this be done and how do i go about doing this

Hi Adam, I dont see why u can't? but is it such a good idea to do so? I got a new leather one off ebay for £60 to replace the nasty plastic one on my 2005 Freelander!

really what the whole steering wheel of just the cover and was it easy to refit as the airbag etc:confused:
 
when you have time could you tell me how and what way you went by on replacing it will be very much appreciated

ah i cheated! The dealer did it for me free of charge cos they screwed up with my warenty work! would have been £45 for them to do it.

that's not a bad price for ld to fit and then i will know its been done properly and less stress. thanks for the advice and the eBay link i will be keeping my eye on that item

Its a really easy task to do.

Disconnect negative terminal on battery. Wait 10 mins.

Undo the two torx bolts that secure the airbag to the wheel. Remove airbag and unclip connector, then undo main steering wheel nut and remove wheel.

Where are you based?? I'll fit for free!!
 
don't wanna be the voice of doom, but if you remove any airbags, insurance company is gonna be unhappy !

this just isn't true.. i used to adapt cars for disabled drivers. one of the adaptions i did involved replacing the airbag steering wheel with another that had a the throttle on it and no airbag. this never caused any problems with insurance companies and i must have done about 500 or so, before the electronic version came out which allowed you to retain the original wheel.
and the adaption was approved by every country in the eu and others outside of the eu.

a few years ago, when the little people were really little, I had an Astravan with front passenger airbag, which I disabled by disconnecting it due to backwards facing baby seat. I rang the insurance company about another matter, and mentioned it in passing, and the guy I spoke to on the phone said that I was modifying the standard safety systems on the vehicle and would have to have a clause in my insurance because of this. In the end, I sold the van anyway (after reconnecting airbag), and the next one didn't have passenger airbag. Maybe things have changed since then.
 
But what you were doing was a recognised and approved adaptation, not just someone disconnecting it. Not withstanding, the insurance company concerned made a few other "interesting" decisions due to me having a company car as well at the time which was not insured with them, so we parted company. Interestingly, I rang them a few weeks back when I was getting my freelander commerical, and they couldn't decide if it was a car or a van and kept ****ing me about with all sorts of stupid questions, and I got the impression they didn't really want the business.

In the end, plumped for Liverpool & Victoria / Frizzells who I had been insured with on other vehicles for years and they bent over backwards. Firstly they said they would give me an open certificate against the registration number, with no model shown until I could send them a copy of the log book. Then they rang back with the details, even telling what their underwriters had classified it as, if I wanted to get other quotes. Gave them my credit card details at quarter past 4 in the afternoon, full certificate in next mornings post.

What I want to know is: When I go to my local independent garage (all makes) with any of my cars, they type in the registration into the computer, and it comes back and tells them exactly what it is, what engine it is, and what parts they need to order for the service etc. Why don't the insurance companies have access to the same database ?

Doh!! Your a little far from me!!

I guess we will have to talk you through it. Seriously, its an easy job - I have changed loads. (Fitted wooden MGF ones to Rovers and coloured ones to replace boring worn freelander ones.)

Do you have a Machine Mart over there?? The tools (torx bits) can be bought for £5 for a set of 6. Even comes with a handy holder and an L shaped tool that holds the bit and allows leverage to be applied.

If yur gaylander is anyfink like the one I had, just drive round yer nearest roundabout and the steering wheel will come off in yer hands!
 
Just Make When You Take Old Wheel Off Road Wheels Are Straight Ahead, Also Make Sure The Rotary Coupler Does Not Turn ,best To Lock It In Position With A Piece Of Gaffer Tape In The Position It Was As You Fit New Wheel,this Is To Ensure Turns To Full Lock Are The Same To Left And Right Other Wise You Can Brake The Ribbon Circuits.
