I have a td4- BMW engine imported from UK. Its giving me problems, when it arrived it was serviced but unfortunately the mechanic only removed the original Crankcase breather filter and replaced it with a smaller size. I am not sure if that is the source of my problem, few months down the line the car just stopped, and it failed to restart completely. Solutions were offered by the way of replacing most censors, ie airflow censor, Crankshaft censor but nothing changed. Another mechanic proposed replacement of rings saying compression is low, but after buying the rings I decided to have a 2nd opinion on it and I got a different view which suggested that it might be fuel regulator. So Before I make the decision to buy the regulator, I thought I may get advice from this forum. As it stands it only cranks without starting, if I put quick start it starts and as soon as it is finished it switches off. Please help

There's loads of checks to complete before condemning the rings. Rings should last 300,000 Miles or more.
Here's the items to check.
Low pressure fuel pump is working.
High pressure fuel pump regulator O rings are in good condition.
Fuel rail pressure sensor is not corroded or wiring to it is faulty.
Unplug the MAF to see if that makes it run.

Those are the items that could stop it running and prevent restarting.

Test those and report back;)

See advice above - +1 from me. Unless the engine has been seriously abused in its life it is most certainly not the rings.
