been looking around the site for a few weeks or so now and finally decided to get set up as I'm very close to purchase a 4x4!

i currently do motocross/enduro and have done for years with the odd bit of trials here n there. i have always wanted a 4x4 but obviously can't have everything, but the time has come where me pride and joy is now up for sale and I'm using the money to get me a jeep!

i am 90% set on a defender 90 purely because i think they look the best. the other 10% is a disco 1. this is where i might need some advice as to what to do.. my bike will get me 6 grand back so thats what I have to play with

do i...
a - spend the full amount on a 90 thats already done
b - buy a cheaper 90 and have some cash spare for stuff to be done
c - buy a cheap disco

any help at all would be a massive help as I'm new to this 4x4 scene just want peoples opinions who's got the t-shirt.

also I'm from the wigan/warrington area so any help on lanes/places to go would be ideal to

thanks, josh!

OK, no not on the bike scene anymore , and then it was only road bikes ( except for the odd off thru a hege at speed)..Ooops.

But , now I have got over the shock of seeing the 4 letter name that should not be uttered written on this forum...LOL.

If you are going to look at anything take a friend who knows his LR products. 6K will get you a nice 90, but it will also get you a piece of rubbish.

A disco will get you a great motor , but do check for rust , then check again, and you will have a bundle of cash left over to spend on toys.

Just make sure all the mods either fitted already or that you fit are good quality and done correctly.

Cheers

aha yeh they are quite hard to stay on the things :D.

its the 90 that stands out to me most and i think if i got a disco and take to it il only regret not getting a 90 and have to mess about selling and buying again.

i do have a mate or two who are mechanics and dabbled with 4x4s themselves so il defo be taking them with me to whatever i go look at as i dont know what I'm looking for. but i do know that i wanna learn as i like to get my hands dirty and fix/do stuff myself like i have done with my bikes. just need to see other peoples opinions to what they would do, cheers for the help

The thing you need to decide is what you are going to use it for? Greenlaning ,daily driver, family runaround, pay and play toy?

Defenders tend to hold and command a high price especially for what they are, however I do understand what you are saying as I have one. Fenders have rust issues in the chassis, plus they do tend to have been owned by people who like to modify them and not everyone who has modified them has done it correctly. Also you may find that as they have been updated / modified that getting spares is interesting as you decipher what part has been used .

But if you want creature comforts then a Disco 1 or 2 is a much more comfortable vehicle to tool around in. Plus they tend to cost less. D1's have body rust issues which hide really well and then surprise you at MOT time, D2's have chassis issues which also can surprise you, plus the electrics can also jump out and bite you.

Good luck.

Cheers

Landy's are a love / hate affair....know that before you start.

I always wanted a 90 Defender - it was the one I had to have and nothing else would do. If that's what you really want then that's what to look for. There is a wealth of knowledge on here about what to look for / check, but from my own experience the following are worth looking for / at:

Check the chassis, rear crossmember & bulkhead VERY carefully - they are known weak spots and are expensive to replace
Check outriggers front and rear
They usually all have engine / fluid leaks - it just depends how many, where from and how bad
They can have electrical gremlins, check everything works
Rock the steering wheel gently from side to side at idle, when I say gently I mean use one finger - if there is play then the steering box will likely be worn and they're expensive to replace with a good quality one
When you park up and put the handbrake on, it will likely roll an inch or two - this is normal so don't worry
Check bottom of the doors for rust - another known spot

There are hundreds of things to look at, this is by NO means a comprehensive list (!) but if you don't check anything else pay particular attention to the first point above.

i have a van for work and share the car with the mrs if we do anything so it will only be used at weekends to go green laning or to pay and play sites, i like the idea of doing a weekend away in it though so do want it to be reliable as it can be ha. as for comfiness I'm not to fussed..

OK, sounds good,

Just be aware of how little space there is in a 90, in front and behind in the back. Also make sure you feel comfy driving it. However the seats can be moved back if you modify it by removing the bulkhead etc.

Cheers

brilliant mate, top stuff! i think I'm the same though, i dont think I'm gonna settle for anything less than a 90 haha! thanks for the info/advice

i am 6ft exactly :(. i think i best take a trip to a dealer then to have a test drive and get a feel for one! this bulkhead kit, what exactly is that and whats the damage likely to be?

And of course, let's not forget security.

You're going to need loads of it. Starter for ten - cat 1 alarm, tracker, quality steering lock, quality pedal lock, steel ignition barrel....the more, the better. Landy's are VERY easy to steal.
