Hello please help I have broken my friend's TD4 Freelander

Who me? I'm no fence sitter where my choice of device is concerned.
I have nothing against the Apple devices themselves. I just don't like a manufacturer telling me what I can or can't do with a device that I actually own.

My main gripe is the way the IOS file system is so locked down.
For instance. If I want to transfer music or files from my Droid to my lappy or vise versa, I can, simply by plugging the Droid into a USB port and transfer away, just as though the Droid is a memory stick. All files and folders are there, just as though it were another drive. Windows even knows where do put the files if the "send to" drop down is used. This kind of open access between different systems is so useful to me. I simply couldn't be doing with the IOS restrictions. Hell you can't even put music from your lappy to the IOS without it spending hours syncing it all across, using extra software on the lappy. I can copy music, pictures or files straight to my phone's expanded memory at 1Gb a minute. IOS won't do that, hence I won't have one. ;)

It depends what device you are going to be hooking it up to. Bluetooth is for Droid.
IOS use WiFi only, due BT being for streaming media only.

I am trying to find one that hooks up to my s7 if that is of any help (sorry to the op if I have sent this thread a little of course )

Yes. It works fine on my 05 TD4 SE. It's even given me gearbox codes before now, which is odd. I use Torque Pro, but Torque Lite works fine for basic code reading and erasing, live data and stuff.

Hello, sorry the i930 did not arrive until late this afternoon. I have not yet managed to get it to give me any live data yet, just not familiar with its functioning, but I checked 3 times clearing the codes each time and it did tell me that the boost air temp sensor was not working (its not plugged in) and that there is a peculiar signal from the cam position sensor! Hoorah! Hoorah! New sensor should be here in the morning. I still can't understand what happened to it if it is that. I will let you know as soon as I know. I have read things about the wiring harness breaking down. Is the Cam sensor wiring prone to this? So for anyone in South Wales area if you want to borrow my new second best friend (after LandyZone) I would very happily share it. BTW did brief leak back test at the same time, no flow without cranking and though I did not turn it over for very long, flow back seemed at least roughly similar for each injector. Note to self next time use jam jars all the same size....
 
Thanks again for all the recommendations for scanners, OBD dongles etc. everyone. Thanks to you all, by 1pm tomorrow I may have gone from Zero to Hero and fully diesel digital.

Nice to hear you’re getting somewhere.

Did you disconnect the battery before starting work? Could you have accidentally arc-ed a wire against the chassis?

Cam sensor should have 5V, GND and SIGNAL wires, I think. Fit the sensor first, then we’ll worry about the wiring.

What is your current opinion of the EasyOBD scanner?
 
Absolutely I did. the very first thing I did was take the battery and battery carrier out, then used the battery as a step when the car was on stands... took the earth lead off first and put it on last, immediately before turning the key first time

Plan A is pray all night, then fit the sensor. Asking about the wiring is so that I have a plan B ready before despair takes over if A fails. Thanks for that about the wiring values.

It is difficult to be objective about the EasyOBD. The very impressive looking website strongly suggested to me that it would give me the data I was looking for as an EU diesel sold in 2004. It did not, it gave some very basic stuff, I didn't explore it on the Freelander as it wont start. The only other vehicle I have tried it on is my 1998 Audi A6 2.8 Auto and again did not have time to explore it and to be fair it is too old to be fully supported, but I think it is an expensive way of getting more or less what others have said they can get from the OBD dongles and a smartphone - essentially a dashboard and perhaps the possibility of clearing fault codes. The VAG.com hand scanner I have wont give me live data but happily reads and clears engine and auto box codes. For the Freelander, the i930 easily picked up the cam sensor and unplugged sensor, The EasyOBD said there were no fault codes and very little live data and no sensors were supported. EasyOBD looked at the log from the scan said it was working fine. As for returns, they claim they make no claims, if I do return the £45 lead, they will subtract the stand alone download price of the "free" software £23 and may waive the "used condition" deduction for the cable. So by the time I pay for postage I may get £10 -£15 back while they put it in another plastic bag and sell it on for another £45. You may guess I am not impressed. But if anyone is interested in trying it I think it may be headed for the bin...
