Hello LR4 engine swap dreamer here

Hello, new to the forum but had my lr4 hse tdv6 for about a year now and it’s needing a few things which has got me thinking about possible engine swaps and modifications so found this forum and interested in some inspiration

Best bet it to ask in the Discovery technical section, rather than the introduction section.
However you're options for engine swaps are pretty limited, simply because of the massive integration of the electronics of the vehicle.
I've read of a couple of people who have fitted the RRS TDV8 in a D3, which would be an interesting if not a cheap conversion.

Thanks, I know I’ll get a lot of hate from the Land Rover original spec fans, but I’m just thinking outside the box, got inspiration from this
Will be posting in the the discovery section, sorry if I offended anyone, new to the site
Bought this book though to look into it further

Whilst the idea of installing an LS V8 into a D4 might be nice it's not straightforward, or cheap, if it's even possible. I don't mean actually installing the engine, that's the easy part.
What isn't easy, is making the rest of the vehicle work with the engine.
Every single computer in the D4 (there are something like 25) will need communicate with the ECM. Now if the ECM doesn't know how to communicate with the rest of the computers in the vehicle, then effectively you have a bricked vehicle. Nothing will work, the gearbox, suspension, the brakes, the dash, nothing.
So yes your book will tell you how to install the LS engine into a 60s stingray, or even a 90s Z06, none of those are a discovery 4, with huge amounts of integrated electronic modules, which must get correct data from the ECM, or the vehicle simply becomes 2.6 tons of scrap.

If you must use a powerful V8, the you're best bet is to use an engine that LR actually used in the D3, the Jaguar AJV8https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_AJ-V8_engine, so the ECM will at least be semi-suitable, although there were hundreds of electronic changes made when the D3 morphed into the D4, it would still be easier than installing something that wasn't designed to link to the D4 at all.

Good luck, but unless you have 100 grand to spend, it's just a dream.

Think some of the yanks have stuck some of their home brew engines into the d3/4?

Maybe, but in the US things like a non-working dash isn't a major issue, whereas here in the UK, it needs to work for the MOT. Don't forget that 1 single warning lamp will also fail the MOT.
So while I accept that doing an engine swap is possible, it's far from easy, and will become with a huge nightmare, when the vehicle refuses to work as it should.

So who’s thrown there dummy out the pram, come on who upset the newbie, lmao
Does a decimal point mean he's upset, or have I missed what the . replaced?

It's not an intentional upset, I'm just pointing out that the D3/4 isn't the sort of vehicle that can have any engine thrown in it, and the vehicle still work.

maybe he went dotty, , snowflake alert ,lol

indeed couldn’t agree more with regards to how complicated it is , oh and he didn’t even make it into anything goes

I have to say that I am very ......... by the whole concept. ;)

I think a supercharged AJV8 would be just as good a conversion, and being it was used in an LR product, it would make the electronics and communication far easier to deal with, although it still wouldn't be particularly easy.;)

Plus 1, Only ones I’ve seen done was the TDV8 3.6 and in aus heard they do the Ford territory swap

The TDV8 was used in the RRS, so being as the RRS and D3/4 are related, then that engine would be, and is a good conversion choice.
It's also has immerse torque, which is what is needed for a 2.6 ton + vehicle.

must admit seeing the pictures of the entire conversion was very interesting

plus as a side note with regards to engines , if I ever had the money to buy a D4 would get the petrol 5 litre V8 or maybe a L322 TDV8 4.4, think they had that fitted after 2007 ??

think in life you’ve got to own a V8 at least once , lol
