Hi guys, a big friendly hello to yall, dont mean to be rude but I need help. My freelander 1 ignition completely jammed so I took a hammer to it. I've turned the whole lock casing to dissable the steering lock, unscrewed the plastic disc at the back, put the non turnable key in the ignition (which has now seen a hammer and screwy) and turned the plastic disc. The dash lights come on but the starter dont do anything. Advice much appreciated

When you dismantled the steering did you see a black platic ring with wires going to it? If you didn't destroy it you need to hold the key next to that as you start the vehicle. If you did destroy it then you'll need a new one plugging in before it'll start. You can pick em up cheap on ebay.

Didn't even look at the link cus I know nothing about them fancy things. Will the engine not start without the key/fob close to the ignition switch? Just wanna start from basics n work up..........
F thats ok with you?

When the key is inserted in the ignition, the microchip is scanned by the reciever ring and disarms the immobiliser. Without this the vehicle will not start.

The immobiliser is multi-point so will do other essential items such as spark, ECU and fuel aswell as the starter motor. I am not willing to post how to bypass the immobiliser on a public forum (for obvious reasons). If the reciever has been damaged it will need replacing. He should be able to tell if this is the problem by looking to see what the red LED is doing on the dash.

Took ignition switch off back of the big aly cast, turned big aly cast so the steering lock is not engaged, tried knocking screwdriver int key slot to turn, no joy. Put key into key slot and turned plastic ignition switch with srewdriver, dash lights illuminate but starter is idle...

Ok folks, thanks for all your quick replies. I'll try those suggestions out in the morning, will check here before I go back to it, but if any of you have more ideas it would be appreciated so I can try these too. Many thanks.

What is the immobiliser light doing why all this is happening?

I am trying to work out if it is an immobiliser issue, ignition switch problem or starter problem. In order to narrow the search down you need to eliminate things. The easiest thing to check is the immobiliser. Just knowing if the little red light is on/off/flashing while you are trying to start it will allow us to continue.
