My garage, who have a had a fair few quid out of me this year, ran it and said they had pressure test for 2 days with no problems. I think I have a rubbish garage, who don't want the hass of a landy head gasket! ;) It was in for prop shaft just before xmas and they didn't look at it despite me asking for a diagnosis re: water loss. Hence why I'm here is the Loonyzone - asking the experts!

Like he says ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^, second opinion can do no harm!

Is there an independent landy specialist around you?
 
As said, crap garage.... Dip stick completely covered in mayo is all they need to see, I wouldn't recommend that you keep driving it either as the oil/gloop flow around the engine will be almost non existent.
Not wishing to be condescending but have you got a bloke you can take with you to a garage as my wife has taken hers to a couple of garages and they've tried to stitch her up and I've wiped the floor with them
 
So I think we all agree it's the head gasket most likely, with maybe more engine damage not known. I'm thinking if so it might be time to cut my losses? (thanks everyone by the way - you're awesome)

Not sure why, head on a freebie shouldnt be a very difficult or expensive job?

I'm new to the forum myself but are there any well known mobile mechanics? ? I've been into K series MGs before getting the landy and we had 4 mobile mechanics up and down the country that all give good service at half the price of a garage.

T some extent that is true of any engine. But I would have thought a proper job should give you 50-100k miles. And the job should cost less than another motor, which might have issues of its own.
As I said, I dont know this engine well, but at a guess it wold need head skimmed, and very careful check that top of block is true. That, and a good quality gasket, job should be a good un.

Try having a search in the freebie section, the opinion of those who have done the job themselves is usually worth listening to! ;) :)
