Hello all :), this is my first post and im also a new landy owner so sorry if i ask any questions!

I got my self an early discovery today 200tdi with a brand new mot and after driving a 40mile trip home i discoverd that all is not well ....

any help anyone can give me on any of the following will be greatly appriciated

1. the indicators only work when im turning right. If i signal left nothing on any of the lights front or back and if i put the hazards on then it appears as if im signaling right.. is this a new stalk or is there somewhere else i should check first?

2. no reverse lights on either side.... switch? easy to get at from under the car?

3 there is no way of telling if you are in first or reverse.... dont even know where to start looking is there a bump stop under the leaver gator?

4 every stereo wire has been hacked to bits any one tell me what colours are what?

5 Handbrake would not hold on a slope altho i know it has new drums fited!

I knew there would be a few problems but i didn't expect all that from my first day as a landy owner!

its my fault for not checking these things and just asuming they would work as its had a brand new mot this morning!

I know its a lot to ask so any help on any of the points above would be great!

gotta say even tho she is no looker im loving having one!:D

thanks for reading my essay guys and gals

If i signal left nothing on any of the lights front or back and if i put the hazards on then it appears as if im signaling right.. is this a new stalk or is there somewhere else i should check first? Check/replace the indicator stalk and then follow wiring

2. no reverse lights on either side.... switch? easy to get at from under the car? dont think so - but simple fix.

3 there is no way of telling if you are in first or reverse.... dont even know where to start looking is there a bump stop under the leaver gator? spring?

4 every stereo wire has been hacked to bits any one tell me what colours are what? get yoself a cop of Rave

5 Handbrake would not hold on a slope altho i know it has new drums fited! Drums???? - its mounted on the back of the transfer box - not the wheels.

I knew there would be a few problems but i didn't expect all that from my first day as a landy owner!

mot failure. shouldnt have passed. take back to dealer and ask him to sort it.

2. no reverse lights on either side.... switch? easy to get at from under the car?
as above, afaik.

3 there is no way of telling if you are in first or reverse.... dont even know where to start looking is there a bump stop under the leaver gator?
best way is first goes forward, reverse is backards.
as mh sez, a spring on the selector. its one of the things you get used to.

4 every stereo wire has been hacked to bits any one tell me what colours are what?
download a copy of rave, dont know off the top of me head.

5 Handbrake would not hold on a slope altho i know it has new drums fited!
handbrake works on transmission. (back of gearbox)
see no.1

I knew there would be a few problems but i didn't expect all that from my first day as a landy owner!

1. the indicators only work when im turning right. If i signal left nothing on any of the lights front or back and if i put the hazards on then it appears as if im signaling right.. is this a new stalk or is there somewhere else i should check first? ( check bulbs and fuses first)

2. no reverse lights on either side.... switch? easy to get at from under the car? ( as above )

3 there is no way of telling if you are in first or reverse.... dont even know where to start looking is there a bump stop under the leaver gator?

4 every stereo wire has been hacked to bits any one tell me what colours are what? ( get a multi-meter and check for power in the wires first)

5 Handbrake would not hold on a slope altho i know it has new drums fited! ( on the back of the transfer box on the drum at the top should be a half inch rachet size hole mate adjust accordingly )

I knew there would be a few problems but i didn't expect all that from my first day as a landy owner!

Some of my answer have already been covered, however:

Indicators will most likely be the stalk switch. Power goes through hazard switch, then to flashed unit, then to stalk. The direction is decided at the last switch, so it's unlikely to be anything else. Could be wiring, but check switch first. As above, MOT issue.

Reverse lights are probably a switch, this is awkward but perfectly doable under the car. Peer up the back passenger side of the transfer case, and look for an aluminium box right up top. This has the gearlever in it. Poking out the back is a little screw in switch. Remove and check. However:

I think your reverse select issue could be related. On a 200tdi, you push left for first, then harder left against a detent for reverse. This little detent unit also pushes out a little rod that pushes the switch. No detent unit or broken might mean no reverse lights. Remove centre console (9 screws) and then remove rubber gasket and aluminium box thing and take a look inside.

Convieniently :D whilst your centre console is out it will be a whole lot easier to sort out the radio wires. Mine were the same, now I have fitted a nice pair of ISO plugs no problem.

The handbrake is usually ****. Rebuild it and you might get improvement, the problem is the drum expander mech is usually worn out. Cheap enough to replace, I'm offroading mine so I've given up using and rebuilding it, I'm saving for a disc conversion.

MOST OF ALL get a Haynes manual for the vehicle. Having a handy book to work with is priceless.

You better be good at DIY repairs cos there'll be lots to do on your Disco. The bonus is they're really really easy to fix and really quite cheap too.

It's definitely good fun owning one.

Today, first job get a Haynes from Halfords, thatll tell you your wiring colours, how to strip the handbrake, the reverse mech, etc etc.

Welcome to the forum :)

This would be a big concern to me.

The reversing lights are not a fail but should be an advisory, the indicators are a fail and the handbrake is a fail and I can't believe all these things developed their problems in the 40miles you drove home (yes I know it's a LR:p), I would be very suspicious of the MOT and be wondering what other problems have been overlooked.

Thanks for everyones replies:clap2: you have all made me feel very welcome so thanks!

I did all the usuall checks for rust like boot floor, inner wings, sills, wheel arches. checked the oil cap for milk and all the usualls i just didnt think to check for mot things.... wont make that mistake twice!

Just got back from work so i guess tomorrow will be filled up with buying a haynes and trying to sort out the things that need doing.

in my experience its you guys that use them every day are better source of information than haynes but you wont go wrong if you have both!

Thanks again guys! :D

haynes never gave me a problem, and it helped me rebuild mine (not done engine yet though)

and afaik there is no RAVE for a 200 shape, which is a major PITA cos everything different.

haynes caters nicely for the pre '95 :)
