Hiya,

I need advice on a Range Rover I've seen....

I've got a 4.0Litre Cherokee jeep at the moment and the fuel economy is killing me.

I've seen a nice 2001 Range Rover 2.5TD and wondered how it would compare on the economy side of things...

Anyone got one?

I do lots of of mileage around town so any real info on the would be good.

Thaaaaaaaanks.

;)

   a woman that does loads of miles round town!!!! they all doo don't they!!!!

what mpg are you getting from the jeep? i suspect the td will do around 20-25mpg.

Oh that's ok I'm really not worried too much about power, I only cart the kid around and my bits for work....

As long as it goes along alright I don't mind.

Is the engine a good one apart from that ?

Very funny briggs......

I'm seeing readings as bad as 9-12mpg around town as long as the computer readings are right.

20/25 around town ? really ?

20-25 overall, in laws jeep 2.8td gets around 25 max mixed use, so i shouldn't imagine the rangie will be too different!

get a lpg converted 4.0 rangie, i get 21.5 on motorway driving and on lpg thats 50p a litre so equivelant of 36+mpg price wise.

i only get around 11-13 round the house but again on lpg at 50p ltr 20's equivelant.

also depending where you live you may be getting/have got the congestion charges, i know in sheffield council car parks are free to green fuel cars!!! works out at around 80p-£1.40 an hour saving depending on where you park!!! bargain!!!

i got a 1999 dse and it was a bit slow std but still a nice drive. its now been chipped and is a great motor now, more power and torque and better on fuel.my mate has a 4.6 vogue and he puts 50 quid a week in his to go to work and back i put 25 quid.(both work for same company and live 1 mile away from each other) been there done that with the v8's great for power and smoothness but they love those petrol stations lol.. i have a larger performance intercooler for sale for a 2001 dse, gives more power and better economy cost 400 quid new..ill accept 170 if anyone is int as it will not fit mine :(

Just sold a manual 2.5 for a later model. Had the 2.5 for three years, and with an electric fan mpg varied from 22-33mpg. lowest figure at 80-85 mph motorway use, highest figure at lower speeds with a light foot. Great car, just make sure it's a good one!

Hello mark,

What distance is your work from home, I should be able to work out quite alot from that info. (assuming 5 days a week)

If I can half my bill i'd be more than happy. Even take a third off would help.

Might be interested in the intercooler if I buy the 2.5, especially if it help the mpg's

:p (no I won't be fitting it myself Briggs!)

I can see those figures from my 4.0L cherokee at the moment on the motorway, not at 85 though, I'll get in the 30's at 70mph...

What about around town, any idea's ???

i didn't say owt!!!

have you thought of getting a smaller engined car???

i seriously dont run my car for economy, i bought a lpg for afordability, and it only just comes into that bracket aswell!!!

i just love the size and grace of it, the comfort and smoothness. although it has its problems but its like a marriage, you work at the problems and enjoy the good times, together!!

oh and like a marriage theres a fair bit of screaming shouting swearing and storming off!!! trust me i've done it!!!

Sorry, no idea about town work mpg, I'm a country person.. Might be better considering something lighter/smaller if the main thing is town driving?

hi, its about 8 miles to work and around 12 on the way back with school run lol, 5 days a week..
i had 1 of these and would recommend to anyone with a diesel
About the Spider diesel tuning device

Well my 2p worth, I have a 97 DSE with a tunit module & very slight increase in boost pressure (1.5 turns in) & its very good in terms of fuel & performance.
I must admit I tend to drive it enthusiasticaly & I get around 23 mpg overall, the only downside is pulling away from a dead stop when cold, you do need a brave pill ! But overall Im pleased, the engines seem pretty tough if a little shy on power in STD form, Im also considering losing the viscous fan & fitting an electric. I had a couple of kenlowes on a V8 and was a lot smoother/responsive.
I have been up the LPG V8 route (twice) before and its true the running costs are pretty good, however if you have any problems you need to weed out the good actual experts from the (virtual) experts !!
On the whole after 5 Rangies (4 V8 1 Isuzu Diesel) I think this is the best package so far.
BTW im also running on 25% Waste Veg Oil, so realisticaly I probably get nearer 30MPG in money terms.
Steve :D

i didnt think you could run the bmw engine on veg oil?
i heard it knackered them up? i could be wrong though.
personally i would not put it mine but our tdi disco loves the stuff :D

From the research I did, I came to the conclusion that most hassles (BMW, RR & Omega) were caused by running the engine on too strong a mix, so I just put in 10l ontop of 30l diesel, I filter it down to 5 microns (same as diesel filter) before I use it & I have an inline heater fitted before the pump but Ive not felt the need to use it yet.
Steve

with veg oil, in most cars it cleans the system and has no lubricant in as diesel does this is where the damage is caused and more often than not its the injector pump that takes a hit, you can add engine oil to veg oil to get the lubricant back in there although i have no idea of %age.

also the veg oil can corrode the rubber/plastic tubes and seals depending on the material they are made from.
