Hello all, my name is David and this is my very first post on Landy Zone. To date I have been an anonymous user using this Forum as a great resource for a few "how to's" and cool images!

Right, let me jump to it..

I recently bought a 1987 Land Rover 90 with the 19j 2.5 Diesel engine (yep, the one people dont favour that well)

I must say, it's performming pretty good, I have given it a little service (except fuel filter, thats pending), ive changed the diesel pump diaphfragm as I noticed when I first got it, the tank was pressurising and thanks to this Forum and the many threads around this, I changed that part and it fixed it, result!

The car pulls strong and gets to 70MPH comfortably (well, its gutless but you can get 70 out of her comfortably)

One thing I have noticed (more so since I changed the diaphragm) is the car kicks out a lot of white smoke on startup, more so when its cold, it does puff every now and then when warm too, but when its warm its really nothing to shout home about.

After doing some research, white smoke is either unburnt diesel or water. The car isnt loosing any water what so ever but does drink fuel like there is no tomorrow so if I had to guess, its possibly running too advance on the fuel (a guess)

I havent yet managed to find anywhere which tells me how to adjust the fuel pump timing (to advance more or retard back).

I did notice when I was changing the diesel pump diaphfragm that there is a pin that moves out and looking at a diagram of a 200 TDI pump diaphfragm pin, it seems that adjusts the timing/amount of fuel on boost, so I figured maybe I upset this (as its adjustable) when I changed the diaphragm and took out the adjuster pin (allen key) to change the diaphragm but then I don't think this would have anything to do with the general timing of the pump to the injectors.

So yeah, thats where I am, in a nutshell can I have a few sentences on how to adjust...I do all my own mechanics but this is my first diesel, Im used to timing guns to adjust ignition timing on a petrol or an ECU to manage the lot :)

I won't lie, its a loud old car and im changing the power steering box tomorrow as thats leaking but apart from that its pretty epic, im almost a month in on ownership and have put 1000 miles on the clock pretty much trouble free!

Cheers,
David.

Nothing in what you say really says that you need to adjust pump timing. A little smoke on start up is normal. Fuel filter should always be first thing to change, air filter, set tappets.
If you have a lot of crankcase pressure might well be head gasket.

Hey Turboman!

Thanks bud for the reply.

Sorry, Im David..im sure I mentioned that :p

Ill change the fuel filter tomorrow and see if that affects it in any way shape or form. Ill also make a video of the amount of white smoking coming out when starting, its enough to fill my driveway (driveway for 4)

Not huge pressure in the crank case but im tempted to run the breather pipe into a catch can and measure the amount of oil over a period of time, the oil level isnt alarming at this stage so confident its a timing thing...

Do I get the advice on adjustment if it is? I literally don't know how :-D

Did I mention it puffs? And pulling away from traffic lights if it sits for 10 secs +, but not as much as when started..

I meant that you are supposed to post in the Introduce Yourself forum first!;) Not what your name is.
White smoke could just as well be valve seals, rings, injectors as pump timing.

Good point! I will get myself in the 'Introduce Yourself' section, cheers matey.

Yeah I understand it would be an array of things but I figured it would have a tinge of blue if oil related.

Besides, I figure Id start with the bits which dont involve surgery (rings, stem seals etc)

Timing, anyone? :)
