Just went on a short trip today, only 40 miles round trip.
Firstly the clutch slave cylinder went, managed to get a new one which is all fitted. Had to force through the gears to get it to the nearest parts shop though. On the way the engine started to knock really loudly. Not the tappets.
Ive checked the top end and everything seems ok.
I am guessing its the bottom end bearing :'( just wanted peoples opinions see if it could be something less difficult.

im actually a big advocate of the k series. its an excellent engine. from 1.4 to 1.8 form. espesh the turbo!

could be all manner of things. any management lights on?
checked all the usual? oil, coolant?

could be an air hose come off and its sends the injection system mental.

Does it feel sluggish or any different in driving? and does the knocking only occur at certain revs ?

Its hard to diagnose things like this over the Internet without hearing it. If its knocking under load or as soon as you rev it, then it could be the big end bearings.

I love the car, its just been a bit of a pain this year.
No management lights, the oil light flickers on and off every now and again but that isnt too much to worry about. Oil and coolant levels are fine. There was oil around two of the spark plugs but I am sure that was just the rocker cover being a bit loose. All of the air hoses are connected and fine. Ive checked and tightened everything up top so thats all ok. Its been a bit sluggish driving but I think thats down to the oil in the spark plugs. The knocking occures from start up but gets louder when you accelerate.

Ive done a full engine flush so shouldnt be the oil ways blocked. There is oil circulation.
Worn big ends seem more probable.
Ill see if I can post a video of the noise.

err it might well be

low oil pressue (maybe just above the threshhold which trips the pressuse switch) will cause significant wear on the bearings and could well have fooked it.

oiled up plugs will rapidly clear and wont affect the engine. If they are knackered they are knackered, but a little bit of oil

no

it if firing on all 4 isnt it?

Hears a video of the noise.
I think we can gather it needs a new oil pump and big end bearings. :(

It is firing on all four now I have cleared the oil.. It was up to the ht leads on two plugs.

The K Series is good for 150K + miles on the original bearings, provided the oil is changed at the correct intervals and the oil pump is working. I've seen cheap filters starve the bearings. On occasion the pressure release valve can jam open, causing pressure loss.
There's more to this. It's a curious fault, that doesn't normally appear in a low powered K series engine.

Hello guys,
I decided to repair the engine if I can so I have removed it entirely, (its easier that way)
I have taken the sump off and the big end bearings are well and truly destroyed. I am actually surprised it wasn't knocking before.
As i was turning the crankshaft, the cylinder liners moved with the piston.
How bad is this and why has this happened?
