hello folks! sorry not been in for a while but not had any probs. till now!
been doing quite a bit of green laneing lately an iv noticed that in water the streering goes very stiff for a few seconds after i have left the water,
not a problem till your about three inch from crashing into a stone wall:eek:
i think its because the power steering pulley is too smooth an the belt is slipping,
but it was a right sod to fit and very tight so dont want to take it off unless i have too.
is this normal when you get em wet an muddy :) or have i got a problem?
thanx

I get this too sometimes, but my battery light comes on as well. Happens even going slow through not very deep water, but sometimes I charge through a huge deep puddle and it's fine.

I guess the alternator belt also slips. Been meaning to see if I can do anything about it, but with no garage, I can't (be arsed to) do it until it stops raining...

You could get some new pulleys made up and use a toothed belt like a timing belt. No big deal, and it won't slip.

I would add this .... Vee-Belts are very clever things, BUT, the belts have to match the pulleys or they will not grip properly. IF the pulleys and belt match, then the belt is dead straight as it approaches the pulley, and the belts feeds in deep. As soon as the belt reaches the pulley it "fits" deep into the groove and then the belt BENDS as it goes round with the pulley. As the belt bends, it gets FATTER on its sides. Bend one in your fingers - you can see it happen. This should really jam the belt to the pulley and give a strong drive, but only if belt tension is good = tight.

First failure is if the flat narrow bottom of the belt hits the bottom of either pulley. It WILL slip.

Second failure is if the angle of the belt or the width of the belt isn't exactly a match for either pulley.

Pick 'n Mix is no good for drive belts.

just one of those things mate, i just clutch mine and give it a rev and it grips again, i get both alt and power steering slip when exiting anything deep.
