When I picked up my TD5 the heater was blanked off. I went to reconnect it and found it was full of solidified oil. It looked abit like the ****e in an egr valve. It has taken til now for it to get rid of all the oil and start giving out any real heat. :(

i fitted a '''scoop'' on the air intake for the heater, its works a treat suprisingly.
also it means that if u dnt have the fan on u still get a good amount of air coming in aslong as ur moving! but does mean it gets ****ing hot somtimes!!

I've got a 1995 300Tdi and i just replaced the expansion tank cos the old un' leaked, I got it + a new cap for 32 quid inc vat & post from Brookwells, excellent service and good gear, anyway, the leaks cured but it hasnt made any difference to the temperature of the heater, even when the gauge is pointing to the middle of the dial the heater temp is barely warm and if I leave it running it cools down so much, the pointer drops right off !!! I put a new thermo in, flushed the system out and fitted a new expansion tank to no avail !!!! could it be the viscous coupling on the fan thats nackered or what ? Has anyone got any ideas ? its bloody freezing man !!!!

did you flush the heater matrix out ? - does the matrix actually get hot ? - are the vent flaps opening ?

you should be able to turn the fan by hand when the engine is cold

The interior fan is actually good enough to cool the engine at tickover - mine is overcooled when stationary at tickover with the heater on.

Check the above things on the previous page to make sure the heater aint pumping the warm air into the engine bay, and check for airlocks int he matrix.

I didnt flush the matrix and I havnt checked the flaps yet, the cooling fan runs flat out all the time, I thought it was supposed to have some sort of clever gizzmo that made it run only when the temperature was up, I should have mentioned also that it came from an Army base in Cyprus and has got air-con fitted ? I'll flush the matrix at the weekend and check the flaps, to flush it do I simply undo the hoses and stick a hosepipe in ??
Cheers

also flush out the heater matrix as old ones block very easily, if its blocked it wont be getting hot so however fast your fan is going you wont be feeling any warm air in the cabin

Maybe i'm thick but how do i flush the heater matrix? Can i do that by itself or do i drain the whole radiator system and flush it with a hose for a few minutes? I only recently drained the whole system when i changed all the filters and a couple og gaskets.....Mark

Ok, I quickly flushed the matrix out with a hose pipe and covered the grill over with a bit of old tarpaulin and the heater's 100% better, it still aint exactly roasting but there's a huge improvement, also it heats up so much faster, the temp' gauge pointer moves quickly up to the middle of the dial and stays there, next step is to stick a bottle of rad flush direct into the matrix then flush it again.
