As above Had the same problem as yours today almost to the letter when i replaced my radiator, did a search and was sure it was an airlock WRONG!!, run the engine and feel the pipes running into the bulkhead from the head, on mine one was red hot and the other lukewarm ,so i disconnected them and shoved a hose pipe down one and watched al the sh*t come flowing out , reconnect and toastie (and no moaning kids)

hi,
as philbr says the hose pipe issue really does the job as the clean water forces and flushes all the crap out of the corners
remember when you bleed the system (once reconnected)
always bleed from the highest possible place, (normally i use temp sensor as a good point to bleed) and dont forget anti freeze at this time of year

This blocked heated matrix must be a diesel thing as i've never heard of a 'petrol' heater matrix being blocked and i've never had this problem and my coolent has only been changed three times in 12 years.
Perhaps the coolent should be changed more often than recommended for a diesel engine.
