It probably is. Unlike the old methods of motor control which was just a set of big resistors, the Face lift Disco 2 heater motor control is a power transistor on a heatsink. From my own experience of power transistors they can often fail with an internal short between the emitter and collector terminals. When that happens you lose all control over the transistor and therefore the motor which was being controlled by it.
I can't remember the type number of a replacement transistor right now, maybe somebody like @sierrafery has more information on that score.

Probably not.
I remember reading somewhere that a suitable replacement power transistor was MJ11016
I don't know how true that is.
Both are NPN types. The MJ11016 has a max collector current of 30 Amps whereas the 2N3055 is listed as max 15 Amps. The power dissipation is also higher for the MJ11016 at 200 Watts compared to 115 Watts of the 2N3055

Ours isn't an ES model but it is a facelift and the MJ11016 works really well and is easily obtainable and cheap on ebay. Best thing to do is take out the board and see what the transistor looks like.

I named the transistors which are originally fitted on the LR units, any direct replacement with same data sheet will work

As @sierrafery has said, there are equivalent devices for those he has listed. Having taken a quick look, I would be happy to fit the MJ11016 as a replacement for the 2SD1460. Both are in the metal TO3 package and both have the current capability on the collector of 30A. Also both transistors are of a similar configuration, that is of a Darlington pair.
The other device which he mentions is the 2SK2313. The difference between it and the other types will be obvious just by looking since it is in the TO3P ceramic or plastic package. Electrically it is totally different to the previous devices in that it is a MOSFET, a high power Field Effect Transistor. However a quick look at the data sheet for the device shows some similarities ith the earlier devices. The "Drain" current (equiv to the collector current) is 60 Amps max and the power dissipation capability is 150 Watts.
I would tend to agree with @brianconwy here. If you have trouble open the unit and check the shape of the transistor.

I can't really understand why LR fitted different power transistors while the rest of the circuit remained the same no matter if it's facelift or not. 
the type of the unit is important though to know which kind transistor to fit to the cooler element that's all

Pulled mine apart and the transistor was ok, the little white thermal fuse underneath the little circuit board was blown(will blow if gets too hot), replaced that for 50cents and all good now. So make sure you check that before going and buying transistors Now mine runs on all speeds again instead of just high
