I just picked my 300 tdi up after having the P gasket and water pump replaced. (I wimped out of doing it myself) I noticed that the header tank was over filled when I looked under the bonnet before driving the car home. I mentioned air locks, etc, to the mechanic and he said there shouldn't be any because he had made sure everything was full, run the engine, topped up, etc. Anyway, I thought I'd take some coolant out in the morning if the level was still too high, but on the way home I noticed I didn't have any heaters. The temp gauge was normal, engine was up to temp, but heaters blowing cold. Then, after about 2 or 3 miles, the heaters started working. When I got home and checked the level in the header tank, that was where it should be. I opened the screw on the thermostat housing plug, (thanks for the tip Mad Hat Man), with the engine running and up to temp and just coolant came out, so I'm hoping that it might have been an air lock which sorted itself out on the way home. Any other thoughts?
