Heated front screen switch

Thread revival - when in 2001 was the heated screen introduced? Just wondering whether mine - a model registered in March 2001 - would have this? Will the fuse-board have a tell-tale slot allocated to it? I'll investigate further - as there are a couple of stone chips that might necessitate a windscreen replacement come MoT time...

Is your a 1.8K? If so then the HFS wasn't an option. I think this was due to the 1.8 having a small alternator.
The HGS is powered by the seperate slave fuse box and relay, fitted next to the under bonnet fuse box.
I've arrowed it in this picture of my TD4 engine bay.

Excuse me butting in here. So does that mean that a heated front windscreen could easily be added to my 06 TD4?

Hmm - bad for me, good for you dog-man, because the answer for you is yes (assuming yours is a FL1)

I've fitted a HFS to my MGF race car (no heater, so needs a way of clearing the screen!) It does load the alternator when it is on, but Mk1 MGFs use a Magneti Marreli alternator rather than the later (less reliable!) Bosch version.

My FL alternator is covered in oil (that non-sealed cam ladder bleeding oil all over the exhaust side of the engine!) but it sounds like bad news. No wires is no wires. Happy to make my own loom, but it won't be as nice and straightforward. :(

On a more positive note, it looks as though I may be able to retrofit heated front seats... :)

There's nothing to stop you fitting one. As long as you are aware that excessive use could flatten the battery. ;)

Do I take it then that the slave fuse box and relay is not already there on my TD4?
If it is, I might risk cracking my screen to get a new one under the insurance.
I assume the connection for the screen is there?

If all the above is correct, it would cost £60. :)

With the MGF, I use the heated rear screen circuit to drive the HFS circuit relay. This means that the HFS will only work once the engine sensor sees an oil pressure (i.e. it is running and charging the battery via the alternator!) and will automatically switch off after about 10 minutes.

On the FL, is this done in a similar way on the MGF - i.e. the timing is done via the multifunction/ body control unit? And is the same BCU fitted to all models of FL?

Hi Rob, the BCU changed around 2001 > /////// it was originally a 27VT Lucas - and various models / firmware of such..
Then - I believe they changed to an EWS-3D unit.... I do not have much info so that may be bo11ox lol :D

The CCU does HFS timing. But I can't see why an independent system can't be installed. There are HRW/ HFS timers available which could be used for a retrofit;)

Just had a read of my Haynes manual and it says the heated screen (If fitted) automatically switches off after 5 minutes.

There is also a simple 555 timer ic and a transistor / mosfet circuit that would do the same (scribble on request) lol - - - or even a capacitor and resistor / mosfet that would also work :)...
ANY simple delay circuit is good enough providing it can switch the current - hence the mosfet - a simple capacitor and resistor would work - really... it is no big deal...
:D

when I enquired about an upgrade for a hfs it would cost an extra £300 because that how much more they cost but If I got my own and had it fitted it would be around £90
because I had already brought the windscreen

This is some way off for me, but just wondering where you guys bought the screens from? An independent screen supplier would be much cheaper than the main Windscreen repairers I am sure.
