Heat/fire proof?!

i got some sound deadening foam (foil backed) for the 90 from eBay. I was away to apply it to the bonnet to save buying expensive stuff. It's sold as non absorbing, heat proof stuff. Even shows a guy holing a lighter to it.

Well I thought I'd test it before I install it. Gave it less than a second with the blow torch (granted its hotter than a lighter) and it burst into flames!!

So, now considering if I should ditch it for the bonnet and buy the proper stuff. Anybody got experience of this?

you answered your own question, ditch the garbage and buy the proper stuff.

I think you're getting it mixed up with asbestos. You're years behind the times as that was finally completely banned in 1999.

To be fair, if you held a blowtorch to a bonnet it’d melt anyway. The bonnet never gets hot enough to cause spontaneous combustion on any material I would have thought, so something sold as “heatproof” (not “flameproof”) should be fine.

Yes unless you are planning on setting your engine bay on fire with a blowtorch there should be no problem fitting it!

I bought some foil backed self adhesive stuff for the D3 engine cover and the material is tight against the engine itself and has never been an issue, but the turbo and exhaust are set low down.
I doubt very much the top of the engine will get much over 100/125 degc even in the summer, turbo of course gets much hotter.

Dont forget the turbo diesel and the 200tdi both had a fibreglass heat shield for the turbo and grp certainly isnt fireproof and thats only an inch or so away from the turbine exhaust housing.
