Hello,

I have a problem with my headlights! If anyone can offer any advice please, I'd be very grateful...

For a while now they have been tempermental when the engine is first started from cold, the engine has to run for a few minutes before they come on, and at first they flick on, off, on, off until they're constantly on. Once this is out the way they work fine for the whole journey.

All other lights work fine straightaway, and the headlights come on straightaway when the engine is warm (eg if I fill up with diesel and start it up again, they come on no problems)

this morning they refused to come on, after half an hour of fiddling I gave up on getting to work on time! I'm fairly certain it's not a fuse issue, because of the previos flickering, and have checked all the fuses. Can anyone tell me what it's likely to be please? I don't know very much about car electrics!

cheers,
Joe

i've had this problem before and yes i was late for work too! it may well just be the earth maybe a bad connection or something. also check the connection at the back of the headlight it may have come loose or damp might have crept in. in my case there was a break in the wire which someone had fixed by adding a connecter. it was touching the body panel and shorting out the light. kept blowing fuses, lights and light switch but turned out to be a simple fix. so check the wiring from the back of the headlights to the dash hope this helps good luck :)

well I found out what the problem is - now to fix it!

all the connections behind the headlight looked ok to me, so I was baffled. Headlights came on no probs this morning, so I set off as once they are on they stay on. However, they went out on the A48 so I pulled over into a layby, and in desperation opened the fuse box by torchlight and accidently knocked the four silver cubes, below where the fuses are. Presto!

So, wiggling these four cubes gets the headlights on! Are these the relays? And is it likely to be a bad connection, or do I need new relays?

cheers,
Joe

It could be a bad connection, it could be a duff/sticky relay. Only one of the relays will be for yer headlights. If your lights are currently working flick the light switch on and off while holding each of the relays in turn. The one that clicks everytime the lights go on and off is the headlight relay. You can now check the connections. Next time the lights don't work you can try tapping the relay. If this cures it you need a new relay. They aren't expensive so you could just replace it anyway to be on the safe side.
