Can anyone tell me - I can seem to find dimensions, if the later pre-facelift "dark" D2 headlights are the same dimensions as the earlier "standard" lights. I have the earlier lights on my D2, but can get some dark ones but various information indicates they can be fitted to 1999 on cars, mine is a 96.

Thanks.

It's a 96 Discovery. It's actually a D1. However, it has been extensively modified in a number of ways that the previous owners did not record. The front end, the lights and part of grille are either D2 or a face-lift of the D1 - interestingly the same front as the diagram on the Haynes 1989-1995 manual - no plastic surround.
This is my 10th Land Rover and the Disco facelifts and messing around have always confused me. You know where you stand with a Series (usually!).

This is the front. Just noticed - two different lights - Doh!

That looks like a much bastardised front end of a post 1994 "facelift" of the Disco 1 to me. The earlier D1 had the two vertical mouldings on the grille.
Those might not actually be different headlamps, other than the bit of black surrounding the reflector, but the one on the nearside is in need of a bit work and some plastic cleaner to restore the clear lens.
In some export regions, this version of the D1 was marketed as a "Discovery 2" still with the 200tdi engine, while in others it was referred to as the facelift D1. The real Discovery 2 was introduced in 1998
I'm not sure about the engines, but I believe although I'm prepared to be contadicted, the original D1 used the 200tdi engine and post 1994 the 300tdi engine was introduced.

I'm happy to go along with that. The reason I asked the question is that I am replacing all the lights, front and rear as none of them are in good condition. I have indicators, just need the headlights. They also both have cracks that will fail an MOT, although lack of anti roll bars is the biggest cause for concern. :)
It's a good chassis (apart from the rear cross member needing sorting) and running gear and given what I paid for it, she's worth more than double in the parts that are on.
There's also a winch bumper going on that big gap at the front.
Cheers.

Forget trying to work out the value of the vehicle by the costs of the parts you've put on it, it doesn't work that way. The only way you'd get your money back is to take the parts off again and sell them separately.
That's what I meant Brian, if all else fails, I will break it.
