They're present but not working. Found the fuse for them, blown 20amp, replaced that and they're still not working. Don't appear to be blocked.

Am I right in thinking that they come on with the windscreen washers or is there a switch I haven't found yet?

1995 300 tdi btw

Head lights wash when lights are on and then you wash the front windscreen
It is a separate pump on the washer bottle, so you could run a live to it to make sure thats not busted, and causes fuse to blow
be careful though as if its blown a 20 amp protect the temp new live wire

They only work when head lights are on and on every 3rd wash onthe windscreen

every 3rd wash, mine do it everytime i wash when the lights are on, think you just have to hold it down enough... one thing i do notice is the lights look like their dimming when you wash them, hope people aren't thinking i'm flashing them lol

My hand book says every 3rd wash i'm going to go and have a play now and see if it really is.
